Transit turmoil

Good lord. What a day. I (apparently foolishly!) believed that I’d be okay for getting to work and back today because of my shift and the fact that I don’t travel during rush hour. HAHAHA. Yeah right. It didn’t look so bad when I left for work this morning when I snapped this photo.

snow

Except I then proceeded to wait for over 40 minutes for a bus that should have been there five minutes after I arrived at my bus stop. Then we had such slippery conditions that we essentially slid all the way down a steep hill (which was as terrifying as it sounds and I think it’s a strong testament to my commitment to my job that I didn’t immediately get off and take the other bus back home) and the driving was very slow from there on out. They also ended up closing streets and re-routing bus lines so that in the end what should normally be a 40-minute commute from my front door to the office ended up taking almost two hours. I was 20 minutes late but I wasn’t the only one so it was no big deal.

I was glad to be at work because we had a big company event this afternoon, however leaving work ended up being no better than trying to get there this morning. I walked with a co-worker to the bus terminal where we waited for one of our two buses and none ever came. A friendly bus driver on a different route offered his bus to the two of us and four other people waiting so that we could get out of the cold until his shift started. We all sat on the bus chatting (yes, we’re Maritimers, all sitting around talking to total strangers, perfectly comfortable!), and then in the end we decided to just take that bus to the next terminal rather than standing out in the freezing rain and cold for our usual bus choices.

Once at the terminal we stood inside a (warm, thankfully) shelter for what felt like eons, waiting for one of our buses to finally come. I’m pretty sure we saw every single bus on the Halifax side go by except one that would take us home.

Just when we were starting to give up any hope at all, a girl that we had met while sitting at the first terminal came running over, happy to see we were still there. She said she was fed up and was taking a cab home, and did we want to split the cost and go with her. It turned out she lives just up the street from me and my friend from work lives about two minutes past her so we immediately agreed, hopped in the taxi she had called, and I was home about five minutes later.

All in all, I finished work at 8:30 and got home at 10:05. Had we not taken the taxi I doubt we would have been home until at least 10:30. I have never been so happy to come home and change into flannel pajamas and a fuzzy robe.

Here’s hoping that tomorrow is a better weather and commuting day.

Time to break out the winter boots

After a fairly mild fall season our temperatures have been dropping including mornings like this one where it was only -5C* and as of tomorrow we’ll be hitting the real “winter is coming” milestone. According to the weather reports – and the weather warnings – we’re slated to get anywhere from 15 to 30 centimeters of snow across our area.

I’m not thrilled, and I’m sure that’s no surprise. Despite all my years of living in this country I still can’t seem to embrace the winter season but it’s inevitable that it will hit us at some point. At this point I’m really grateful for the fact that I work an off-shift. The morning should be okay, I don’t think it’s supposed to start snowing until the afternoon. However, having seen how everyone forgets how to drive the second a few flakes fall from the sky I know that the rush hour traffic on the way home could be a bit of a nightmare. By the time I’m on my way home it should have died down and most people will be at home and hopefully just staying there so that we can get where we’re going.

Winter boots for everyone tomorrow!

*Despite the fact that it was cold out I saw a kid run by in SHORTS. If it was someone jogging it would have been excusable but it was just a random kid. If one of my kids tried to get out of the house in shorts in this kind of weather I’d flip out and make them change!

Parade of Lights in downtown Halifax

Tonight we ate an early dinner and then headed out right at 5 pm with a good friend of ours and his kids so we could catch the Halifax Parade of Lights which is essentially a Christmas parade. It’s filled with floats, marching bands, majorettes (I *love* majorettes, I always wanted to be one when I was a kid!), and of course the Big Guy, Santa Claus.

IMG_7156

It was a great night for our first parade in Halifax. It wasn’t too cold, just comfortable for the most part. I was a little chilly by the end of the parade but overall it was very nice. There was one “huh?!” moment though. They had a float sponsored by one of the fitness places go by and they were pole dancing. I’m no prude whatsoever, believe me, but pole dancing in a parade for kids and families? Really?!

IMG_7102

The kids had a blast. They sat with their friends on the curb and watched everything go by. Hayley got a candy cane from one of the floats and Breanna got a hug from Cookie Monster, so all was good. And much to my amusement and glee there was a Stormtrooper doing the Running Man. That just pretty much filled me with joy.

IMG_7174

And much joy was also had courtesy of the Grinch and Kermit the Frog, consecutively.

Also, every once in awhile I see a person on the street that makes me wish I could get over my shyness and just go up and ask them if I could schedule a whole photo shoot with them. This Native American girl in a Mic’Maq float was one of them. She was just so photogenic and beautiful that I would love to spend an hour taking pictures of her. And the man in the amazing traditional costume behind her for that matter.

Next week there will the the lighting of the big tree downtown and I’m not sure if we’ll go or not; they figure that about 100,000 people showed up for the parade, and I can’t imagine a large crowd showing up in one small park for a tree lighting, but we’ll see. In the meantime I had a lot of fun tonight and took almost 200 pictures. Good times! 🙂

Waterfront lunch

Yesterday when I got to work I was about 50 minutes early, as I usually am. I got off the bus and decided I didn’t really feel like going in just yet so I decided to walk a block down and check out some shops (window shopping only, alas). Once I was done browsing around a cute little store I felt a bit hungry; I normally bring a lunch with me to eat before my shift starts but I didn’t want to go sit in the lunch room to eat it.

It was a beautiful sunny day, the temperature was quite nice, and I was bundled up enough that I thought, “you know, one of the reasons I love living here is being near the water, but what’s the point of being near it if I never go SEE it?” And so I continued walking straight down to the waterfront, plopped myself down on a bench, and ate my lunch while looking out at the harbour.

Halifax Harbour

Now our lunch room is perfectly lovely, as far as lunch rooms go, and I can sort of see a bit of the water in between buildings if I look out the window. However I’m sorry, the lunch room’s got nothing on a bench down at the waterfront.

That was the most relaxed lunch I’ve had in ages and I still had enough time to take my time getting back to where I needed to be. I think I might have to do that again soon.

Water weekend

Over the weekend we decided to take advantage of three things: No work, beautiful weather, and living in a place surrounded by water.

IMAG0191

Saturday found us at the beach, frolicking in the ocean. I’ve been in the Atlantic many times now and that was the warmest it’s ever been this high up the coast. Naturally the Atlantic is very pleasant for swimming down south but up here, well it’s usually on the chilly side and you just go with it because you don’t have any other choice if you want to get in there. However, the water was perfect and I had a ball swimming around (no rogue waves tried to drown me like last time, when I got slammed face-first into the sand by a wall of water).

IMAG0183

The kids are getting braver, especially since we brought their lifejackets with us. They were both running all over the place, jumping over waves and having a great time. It was a fantastic way to spend a hot, sunny afternoon as a family.

IMAG0196

A few dogs showed up (with their owners of course) and although there’s a sign saying that dogs must be leashed, they unhooked the leashes and all three dogs swam with their people. They didn’t bother a soul and no one complained (no lifeguards). I like that. As long as you aren’t actively upsetting anyone, things are fine. Not one dog went up to sniff anyone, they just swam, splashed, and behaved. It was awesome.

On Sunday the kids wanted to go to a nearby lake instead. Part of that was because although Hayley had a great time jumping waves, she wanted to go somewhere that would let her just paddle around. The beach at this particular lake is quite small and I worried that maybe it would be packed on such a beautiful Sunday afternoon but it wasn’t too bad after all.

IMAG0199

The water was really warm so I was able to enjoy another day of swimming around and enjoying the day. Breanna had a moment of panic when she suddenly couldn’t touch the bottom and was cautious the rest of the time we were there but she had fun and is slowly learning to trust the lifejacket.

IMAG0200

There were a couple of ducks there who are obviously very used to people and they weren’t scared at all. One swam all of a foot away right in front of Breanna and then two others poked around the beach, looking for dropped crumbs.

I don’t believe in daily horoscopes. They’re usually a load of crap and if they happen to come true it’s because it can be twisted to fit your situation. However, I do believe there’s a certain amount of truth to astrological signs. As a Cancer I’m a water sign and that couldn’t be more accurate for me. I’ve always been a water person and living in a place that has the entire Atlantic ocean up one side and hundreds of lakes dotted all over the place… well, I couldn’t live in a more perfect place, really. Even at work I can see a wee bit of the Halifax Harbour from the windows and even that’s enough to make me smile and feel relaxed.

Summer is wrapping up soon but hopefully there will still be time for a handful of beach runs before it gets too cold.

Life near the ocean

Recently our good friends Dino, Nancy, and their daughter all came out to Halifax for their vacation time and we had such a great time. Obviously I couldn’t be around all the time because of when I started work but it was okay and I got to spend evenings with them. Two particularly fun times were Natal Day (August 1st), and the following Saturday, August 6th. We all headed out to Crystal Crescent Beach and having never been there either, I really didn’t know what to expect. Let me put it this way: Lawrencetown Beach was my number one favorite ocean spot for years, but it has now been bumped down to the second place slot. Crystal Crescent is stupidly gorgeous. The first time we went it was foggy and it was STILL amazing. Then we went back the second time and it was clear, and it was even more beautiful.

IMG_5608

The real reason that we moved to Halifax was to have better opportunities, a fresh start, and a good future for our family of four. However, I often joke that I moved here for the ocean. It’s not too hard to believe that though, is it?

IMG_5564

IMG_5707

It also makes yoga feel that much more fun (and considering my love of yoga, that’s saying something!).

IMG_5713

IMG_5804

IMG_5776

It’s within such a short driving distance that it’s almost ridiculous. This beach definitely falls into the category of, “Do I really LIVE here?! Seriously?”

I can’t wait to go back.

Pre-work vacation time

I don’t think I had mentioned this before; perhaps I didn’t even know for sure yet when I last posted (I know, it’s been awhile). I had my final interview for my job and I got the call about a week or so later with the official offer. I’m so relieved to have secured the job! I had a really good feeling after each interview but it was still nerve-wracking to not know for sure. I’ll be starting this coming Friday (I’m assuming it starts with an orientation since it’s a Friday, plus we have a long weekend after that), and I’m alternating between feeling nervous and really excited. Due to the fact that I’ve seen more than one person get royally screwed because they talk about work on the internet (I don’t want to be “dooced” thanks very much!), no I can’t say where I’m working or what I’m specifically doing. I will say that I’m dealing with clients and that’s as far as my description goes. I’m going to rock at it though!

Anyway, since I’ll soon be back in the work force full time, I’ve been spending this last little bit of time just taking it easy and enjoying my time off as though I’m on vacation. I can’t remember everything but a wee summary is something I can do.

I had a small group of people over for my birthday the Saturday after my actual big day. I realized it was the first time in over a decade that I’d had a party of sorts for myself. Our apartment just wasn’t conducive to gatherings other than for the kids’ birthdays but this house sure is! I also had my sister, her husband, and my niece (!) over twice since moving in. I can’t even say how nice that is.

The kids met their cousin who is visiting from Toronto and he ended up having a sleepover here. He was over because we had all gone down to the harbour for the jazz fest. We ended up skipping the music since it was all super expensive but we had a nice time going out for a beer downtown anyway.

Date night!

Night boat

It was completely surreal to wander along the waterfront and realize that we LIVE here now; it wasn’t just a visit. Surreal, yet amazing.

Settling in (a virtual house tour!)

Boy it’s been awhile since I updated, hasn’t it? Then again I think it’s easy to understand why, what with moving two provinces over and all. I can’t possibly catch you up on everything that’s happened since we loaded up our moving truck but I can at least show you around our home, at least as far as we’ve set it up.

We actually had the living room more or less done the day after we unloaded the truck, the dining room was set up immediately afterwards, and the kitchen was the first room that I fully unpacked. The bedrooms came along next, then George started setting up his music room. The rec room is only partially done right now because we have a lot of boxes down there to go through, including some that are full of things that seemed important to pack but now don’t seem to fit in with our new home. In fact, we brought our big wall unit from the apartment specifically because I really loved it and right now it’s being stored in our shed because it just isn’t being needed after all. We did, however, at least set up a futon and a second television for the kids to use down there and I’ll start unpacking some of their toys and organizing those over the course of this week.

Ready for a tour? Here we go! The living room from a variety of angles. It’s a huge room and I LOVE it. Just a quick move of the coffee table and I’ve got plenty of space for yoga.

We have a home base

I believe I neglected to write about this, though I did sob about it on Facebook. About a month, maybe a month and a half ago, we found a place to live. It was cute! It was the end unit in a row of three townhouses in a little townhouse community. It had a shared backyard but a private deck, a community swimming pool (heated even! With lifeguards and lessons!), nice space, and a cool kitchen. I spoke a few times to the owner and she and I really hit it off immediately. She really liked me and the way I described how our family is moving out to Halifax, and she also liked George’s cousin a lot when he went to check it out.

On the Friday she told me it was ours if we wanted it and when I said an emphatic yes she sent me the application and told me that she’d get the lease to me in a day or so. We paid the security deposit and I was so motivated to pack, picturing where all our stuff would go in our new home.

On the Saturday I found out that she actually co-owned the place with a family member who had given it over to new tenants on the Thursday; the lease was signed, they had the keys, and they had scheduled a set-up with all the utilities. We were once again without a home. (Yes, we got the deposit back immediately.) I was really down. I mean REALLY down. I don’t take elation followed by instant disappointment well.

Anyway. A couple of weeks ago we did actually sign a lease on a new place. George’s cousin saw it and said it was great and that we’d be very happy with it. I liked what I saw of the pictures on the Kijiji listing, though they weren’t great shots, leaving me wondering just how big or small each room was, and there were no exterior shots nor were there any pictures of the kitchen, dining area, or the two bathrooms. Still, we trusted his judgment and grabbed it.

It’s in a great location with a bus I can take downtown for work, and there are several conveniences nearby in the form of grocery stores, Tim Hortons, and the NSLC (it will take time for me to get used to the fact that you can’t buy beer at the corner store but must instead go to the liquor store!).

Then his cousin went last night to pay the security deposit and next month’s rent. That was one thing I immediately liked about our new landlord – that should have been paid upon signing the lease but he wanted to repaint the place first and refused to accept any money until he had completed that job satisfactorily. That’s a huge step up from this place where they don’t give a crap about things like missing screens, leaky taps, or “minor inconveniences” like mold.

While he was there he was able to get pictures of all the rooms and suffice it to say I am ecstatic after seeing them. I had also gotten some great exterior shots earlier in the week from a friend who lives out that way (hi Patricia!), and I’m just in love with this house.

Unlike the townhouse it’s a semi-detached house and we have our own private yard. The yard isn’t big but it’s quite nice with a deck off the dining room, a patio down on the ground with a gazebo, a big shed, some nice plants, a fence, and even a spot for a wee garden. The kitchen is the only unfortunate part in that it’s still a galley kitchen like what we have in the current apartment BUT it’s bigger than this one with more counter space. The counters, tiles, and cupboards are much nicer, there’s a double sink which is something I’ve always wanted, and we have an actual pantry. For years we had to sacrifice two kitchen cupboards as a makeshift pantry, so that makes me happy. All that’s missing is a window over the sink (and, well, a dishwasher, but I’ve never had one anyway so it’s not a huge deal), but I’ll just hand a nice ocean picture there and use that as my “window” instead!

It’s such a relief to have a home. The kids are excited to each have their own room and I’m excited about that too since I’m tired of hearing them bicker in one room together! George has space for a music room and we will be able to have both a living room AND a family room. I’m thrilled!

If you’re my friend on Facebook you’ve already seen the pictures but if not, I also have them uploaded here. (In the close-up of the front those aren’t graffiti marks, that’s just me using Photoshop to hide our street number!)

I’m very happy and can’t wait to get set up!

What’s going on

Whew. I can’t believe I haven’t updated since May 20th. Honestly. I had really kind of wanted to document the whole process of preparing to move to Halifax a little more clearly because I like being able to look back on things and read about stuff I might have forgotten with time. The truth is, I’ve just been so busy, especially the past couple of weeks. By the time I get done with my day the only thing I can do at my computer is read everyone else’s blog posts. I have been updating on Facebook but although it has an ease that beats out blogging, there’s no archive system; I can’t think to myself, “hmm, what was I doing on June 10th?” and easily find it six months from now.

Thus, although I haven’t posted about moving regularly, let me catch you up on the chaos.

Oh yes, chaos. This blog isn’t called “Chaos Theory” for nothing! These pictures demonstrate exactly what it’s like to live in our apartment right now. We’re surrounded by towers of cardboard boxes (still color coded and numbered with an accompanying spreadsheet detailing what’s in each one, I’m amazed I’ve stuck with being organized this long). Getting through our living room is getting more and more difficult but at least it’s not for much longer.

Chaos

Send help

And yes, I *love* that the kids keep putting their stuff randomly on top of boxes as though they’re tables. Sheesh. Anyway, it’s just nuts in here and with all the boxes piling up around me I’m thinking that despite the fact that I’ve read about the Zombie Apocalypse and am now currently reading about the Robot Uprising, the truth is the cardboard boxes are going to gain intelligence and kill us all in our sleep.

Man, I need to get this move over with. Only 17 more days as of today.

However it hasn’t all been super serious. I went to the school one day to hang out while the kids all did a Jump Rope For Heart Health event. Everyone was outside in the school yard skipping and running around and it was just a blast on a nice sunny day. I even managed to jump in, skip ten times, and jump out without falling down or losing bladder control, so go me. Like my friend said though, skipping was easier when we were younger and didn’t have any boobs yet.

You’re welcome.

I also went on a field trip. I wasn’t needed for Hayley’s class trip to a museum (too bad, since I had never been there), but I went with the grade four classes when they went to a different museum and then went on a walking tour of Old Montreal. It was really cold especially being so close to the Old Port but I’d rather walk in the cold than the humidity so it was fine. I loved it and took some pictures though I haven’t had a chance to process them yet. I’ll post them eventually. I was gone all day and had such a great time, and learned things too. I also learned that girls in grade four are now very emotionally dramatic and hormonal in ways we weren’t back when I was that age and it kind of scared me. Yikes!

Last weekend we had an impromptu BBQ with friends and that’s really my favorite kind of weekend day and evening – the one where you had no plans and suddenly you were packing your bathing suit and heading over to eat BBQ pork tenderloin with people you love, especially when they’re the people you’re going to miss very soon. The kids swam pretty much all day because they are insane and had no understanding that the water was COLD.

Ole!

Meanwhile the three moms cleared away the dishes after supper, parked the kids inside to play, left the dads on supervision, and we took our wine across the street to the hot tub. I thought I would set up my camera for a timer shot of the three of us but my gorillapod was too low and in our rush to get into place before it snapped we kind of slipped and slid all over the place, ending with the most hilarious photo I’ve taken in ages.

LOL

And no, we didn’t spill our wine.

Finally, even though it was a weeknight, on Wednesday I went out to supper at my favorite local restaurant, Table 51, with the members of the PPO. They’re another group of people I will miss tremendously after we move, they’re all amazing.

PPO

(Why yes, we are a bunch of really hot moms, and bless the poor lone dad who is brave enough to come to meetings and deal with all the estrogen.)

I ate way too much. We split appetizers so I ate a “croquette” (potato, cheese, and bacon rolled into a ball and deep fried, then dipped in jalapeno mayo sauce), a bunch of homemade chips and crackers with hummus and guacamole (my favorite), a “mini mac” which is an itty bitty facsimile of a Big Mac (it tastes just like it, minus the accompanying nausea you get at Mickey D’s), and a bit of braised beef poutine (made with fingerling potatoes instead of fries, lots of curd cheese, and a rich wine gravy, oh mah GOD). That was really more than enough but I still ordered a veggie burger (made with lentils, oatmeal, and brown rice and served on a bun with tomatoes, red onion, dressing, cheese, and arugula, delicious!) with fries. I only managed half the burger before I nearly died so I ate the rest for lunch. The two glasses of Pinot Noir were wonderful too.

Oh hell yes

Other than that it’s been all about packing, taking breaks to read voraciously on my Kindle (more about that in another entry as this one is long enough now!), and occasionally doing strange things with my body all in the name of yoga.

Eight angle pose

There is so much I’m going to miss but part of me is just really eager to get to Halifax so I can decompress just a wee bit!
