Well that's unusual

Let’s play some “Jeopardy!”

I’ll take “That’s Unusual!” for $1000 dollars, please Alex.

Answer: Things you don’t see every day in an apartment complex in a fairly busy suburban area of Montreal.

Question: What are ducks?

Well that's unusual

No, really. Our suburb isn’t a super quiet almost-country ‘burb. It’s fairly busy, our particular area is rather noisy since our building is on a main street, and although you can technically walk to a body of water, it’s not exactly close by.

And yet, for the past week these two ducks have been hanging around, disappearing during the hotter parts of the day and returning for the cooler evenings. They just walk around on the grass, quacking merrily away as though it’s perfectly NORMAL for a pair of ducks to be in the middle of an apartment complex courtyard.

They’re not scared. They won’t let anyone get too close but another woman was taking pictures too and she got within a few feet of them and they seemed just fine with that. They’re not aggressive either, they just … hang out.

Maybe they’re waiting to see one of the apartments that will be available in July?

If one of them lays eggs and hatches a bunch of fuzzy itty bitty ducks I may never come back inside.

  1. There are some weird migratory things going on. We had a duck the likes of which we’ve never seen come down and she DID hatch a bunch of furry little critters. This all occurred at my aunts home as ducks are scared of my home – the land in which all snakes must enter. GAH!

  2. At the nature reserve up north, the ducks will usually eat grains from your hand. It may take a while to win their trust but that’s about the coolest thing that is about that place, maybe your ducks will pick up the habit too, if you only try.

  3. Ooooooh, fuzzy little ducklings … how cute would that be??? Let’s give a big, collective “Awwwww!” 🙂

  5. We sometimes get ducks spending a few days with us in our swimming pool in suburban Brisbane, Australia. Only one problem, they don’t get out of the pool to use the bathroom.

  6. Sherry,

You should find the book Make Way for Ducklings for the girls. Your story reminded me of it. 🙂

  7. We have two mallards that hang out by the front entrance of AcronymCo, just watching the people coming and going and quacking up a commentary if someone approaches too close. They lay their eggs in the landscaping near the front entrance every year, and every year they come back and lay again because that’s what mallards do – go back to the same nesting spot every year. They just hang out all day long and folks toss them popcorn, and someone brought a kiddie pool and filled it with water near the front entrance. I wonder what our customers thought about that??
