I don’t mean to be the sterotypical Canadian, always talking about (aboot?) the weather, but the wind is insane here right now. The wind is currently being clocked at 75 km per hour, with gusts up to 95 km per hour (that’s 47 mph and 60mph respectively, for non-metric folks). All our windows are rattling loudly, our DOOR (which is an apartment door, ie it opens into an enclosed hallway and not the street) is rattling back and forth, which freaks Hayley out because it sounds like someone is constantly trying to open it, and the exhaust fans are making a ton of noise in the bathroom and over the stove. In fact, the one over the stove is so drafty that it’s shaking the light bulb enough to make the light flicker. I finally turned the light off altogether once I had finished making my grilled cheese sandwiches because the flickering kept making me think the power was about to go off.
Even with the heat up and all the windows shut tight, the wind is still making enough of a draft that I bundled Breanna in a blanket, I’ve allowed no arguments from Hayley in regards to having to keep socks or slippers on, and all I want to do is sit and drink hot tea under a thick comforter all day.
On top of that the local news opened with stories of people actually putting cleats on over their boots in order to deal with the slippery sidewalks after the snow-turned-freezing rain-turned-rain. Some of the downtown sidewalks have actually been blocked off by the city because they’re too dangerous to walk on and pedestriians are walking along the streets to avoid falling down. Last night, before the salt trucks had made the rounds, it was slippery enough that a man was killed after an oil tanker lost control and slid into a car.
I know it’s February in Montreal and the weather can be a little crazy, but this is a bit ridiculous.
Its terrible isn’t it. My dog who isn’t normally frightened of weather is pacing and barking and generally stressed out. We’re hanging out in the family room in the basement where the rattling isn’t so bad 🙁 I keep checking to see if my Birch tree is going to fall on the house, seriously its lost some small branches already!
man that is some fast wind! it is cold here too, -30 🙁 I thought I was getting away from this kind of weather!
Wish me luck getting home!
Sherry, apparently there is a 60 car pile up on the highway towards Quebec City and the MET is closed of because of a buildings windows shattering down on it on one side, and a truck accident on the other side killing 8 people. Just thought I would ad to your news updates.
It’s crazy ass cold and windy here too. Just gusting to 40mph. So weird.
Last night, the wind was gusting so hard here in Toronto, both my dog and my budgie refused to sleep – they both kept me up until the wee hours. Animals always seem to know when something is up. And sometime during the night, I remember a big crack of thunder. Don’t know if I was dreaming that or it really happened…
