Think good thoughts

Tomorrow is not only Monday, it’s also mere days before Christmas day. It’s ALSO the day where I will be hitting up Toys R Us and Best Buy among others for our Christmas shopping. It’s the only chance we’ve gotten as far as shopping goes. I’m feeling more or less calm about it since I know exactly what I’m looking for and most people will still be working so hopefully it won’t be too busy and chaotic in the stores.

Hayley has school for two days this week (really only one day because Tuesday is the school-wide holiday party day so I doubt they’ll be teaching much of anything – though the math teacher DOES have a homework sheet for Tuesday, sheesh!) so she’ll be there while we’re out and we’re dropping Breanna over at her grandparents’ house while we head off to the stores.

I’m a bit stressed out because I do wish we had been able to do this all much sooner but that’s the way the cookie crumbles (or the way the bank account fluctuates, whatever you want to call it). Also, it’s not the first time we’ve done it and although I always dread it, it always works out. I don’t know what kind of magic they work in Toys R Us but we’ve always been pretty lucky over there.

Still, keep your fingers crossed and think good thoughts for us tomorrow morning! Please?

In my typical way…

I have not bought a single Christmas present yet. Nope. Not one. Not even for the kids. What? Why yes, yes I *am* aware that Christmas is next week. Thanks for the reminder though.

Really, I couldn’t have done it much sooner since I had to wait for funds and whatnot. Pesky money! And it sucks because a) my gifts to my sister and Neal won’t get there before the new year, which is really disappointing, and b) I’ll be stuck going to stores with all of the last-minute crazy people.

By crazy people I mean the people who shop in the last few days before the big day with absolutely no clue what they want to buy. I have a game plan, I’ve got each item listed on a piece of paper with the price and the store location. If they happen to be out of said item, I also have back-up ideas just in case. I may be shopping in the last days leading up to Christmas but at least I know what I want.

I’ve seen people frantically grabbing at anything they can reach, shoving it towards their husband/wife/whatever and asking, “what about this? Will they like THIS?!” Their eyes are usually bulging and their voices lift up in a higher pitch the longer they talk. When I worked at Hallmark one holiday season I remember a man trying to convince his brother that it was okay to buy a Catholic rosary for his Jewish wife for Hanukkah because it was pretty. Um, yeah okay.

I just need to wait until next week because there’s no way in hell I’m stepping foot inside any major stores the weekend before Christmas, and then George and I will set out and do our best to conquer. I really do hope that one year I’ll manage to be all done with my shopping before the middle of the month, but clearly this was not the year for that. Again.

Then again, hey, it’s fun to live on the edge right? Right?

Hmm. Well, wish me luck and next week if I survive I will let you know how it went!

Our Advent activity calendar so far

This season, inspired by Andrea, I created an advent calendar full of activities instead of chocolate (the kids aren’t deprived, they still have the chocolate one too), with one thing for each day up until December 25th. I thought it was such a great idea, so I used a variety of papers and leftover gift bags to make envelopes, strung up a cord across our living room entertainment unit, and used clothes pegs to hang them.

Advent calendar

So far they’ve been a big hit, even if some of the activities are quieter than the others. On day one we started simple, doing manicures and pedicures for Hayley and Breanna. They loved that, especially Breanna who is becoming very girly about makeovers and whatnot.

On day two we wrote letters to Santa. Hayley decided she’d like a Fur Real dog to go with the cat she got last year and Breanna wanted a rocket ship. I’m sure Santa will be able to find both lying around his workshop.

Day three brought out the scissors and they made some paper snowflakes, some of which are decorating the wall over the couch:

Advent activity: Snowflakes

Day four was a HUGE hit (and was not photographed for obvious reasons) because they got to have a candlelit bubble bath. They thought it was the coolest thing ever and unfortunately it has caused them to become completely unimpressed with regular old run-of-the-mill baths now. Alas.

Competition

For day five we had Family Game Night – Wii Edition. We played a couple of party games that I had received for review (look for that on the review blog later this week), then moved on to Wii Sports. Somehow it seems that my kids are bowling demons and they showed up both George and myself. Hayley threw numerous strikes and Breanna nearly made me faint as she ended up throwing turkeys (three strikes in a row) with ease. We played in teams; Breanna and I won both games against George and Hayley and I fully confess that our win had very little to do with me.

Day six was the day we decorated the Christmas tree, something that always goes over well. This year was especially fun since they’re now both old enough to understand that you generally put one ornament per branch instead of, you know, ten on one branch like other years.

Yesterday was day seven and I needed something relatively quick and easy since I had a Governing Board meeting at the school. I slipped in the paper for making pine cone bird feeders. Those are fun and so simple to do, albeit a bit messy.

Bird feeders

All you need to do is tie a string to the top of a pine cone, coat the edges with peanut butter, and then just roll the whole thing in a bowl of birdseed. Once they were both done with their feeders (two each), I tied them all to a cord and strung them out on the balcony.

Bird feeders

Today we ended up doing a pizza picnic in the living room with a movie (George chose Monsters Inc. since we’re saving Christmas movies/shows for another Advent day). The kids love having picnics in the living room and naturally pizza is always a hit so that worked out well.

I haven’t decided which activity to slip inside tomorrow’s envelope. If we get the big snowfall we’re supposed to be getting, maybe we’ll go for building a snowman.

I’m loving this Advent Calendar and will definitely keep all my envelopes to use again next year!

Putting the holly in the jolly

On Sunday I was finally able to turn the living room from “meh” to “holly jolly”. In fact there’s so much holly and so much jolly that I can’t stop smiling when I walk in the room and really, I don’t do that often.

I pulled the boxes out of storage in the morning and when I let the kids read their activity in their Advent Calendar it told them we were going to decorate the tree. They were pretty excited and they love to help. While I do dream of one day owning a ginormous tree, I must admit that the 4-foot tree is really the perfect height for young kids; even Breanna can reach the top branches when it’s on the floor, and I have to say it’s nice to move it up out of the way so that no one falls into it while running around or playing with the dog (not that anything of that sort would ever happen here, I’m sure, ahem).

Decorating

I also have the lights up around my china hutch which is one of my favorite decorations and I usually keep lighting that up well into the late winter just because it looks pretty and gives the living room some nice soft light. In the meantime, I had a few spare strings of lights so I even put one in the corner of the kids’ room, another in the main bedroom, and one in over the kids’ computer in the living room.

Festive electronics

Combined with the other decorations (homemade paper snowflakes, wreath on the door, Santa’s clothesline, snowmen, etc), it’s all I can do to keep from blasting Christmas music all day long. I’m feeling so festive it’s disgusting.

All done

Decorated

But don’t worry, it will pass. Nothing kills the holiday spirit like knowing you still need to do all your Christmas shopping.

*******

Just like every year since it began, I’m taking part in Holidailies and will be updating most days (probably not all days since it is the holiday season) between December 7th and January 6th so you can expect a lot of total drivel brilliance over here throughout. Are you taking part too?

Happy Yanksgiving!

Okay, so it’s not a turkey and it’s not homemade stuffing. There’s no cranberry sauce (tragedy!), no gravy, no pigeon peas & rice, and even worse there’s no pumpkin pie (*sob*).

Yanksgiving

Still, if you’re going to have a “Yanksgiving Dinner” because you just can’t take it anymore after hearing all your American friends cover their blogs and Twitter streams with turkey talk… well, it ain’t half bad. Especially when you consider it’s technically just a plain old Thursday up here.

I hope all of the people below our border had a wonderful Thanksgiving!

Turkey envy

Ah yes, ’tis that time of year again. It’s that time where every single email and website (and now Twitter account) seems to be talking turkey and although we already had our Thanksgiving last month up here in Canuckistan, I want another one because the turkey conversations are making me crazy with hunger.

Besides, our Thanksgiving gathering was on the smaller side this year so we had chickens instead and it was GOOD because my mother-in-law doesn’t know how to cook anything that tastes anything less than delicious, but ohhh turkey. I’m looking forward to Christmas dinner, let’s put it that way!

Last year I had what was dubbed by someone out there in Internet-land as a “Yanksgiving dinner” and I think I just might have to do it again. Looking over my meal plan for the week we’re supposed to have chicken legs on Thursday but I think I’ll have to thaw out one of our whole chickens in the freezer and I’ll roast up one of those with some baked potatoes, stuffing, and vegetables.

Then I can stuff myself silly and moan about how full I am just like everyone South of the border.

Christmas planning in mid-November? I must be crazy!

In that time in between growing up and having kids of my own, I started becoming ambivalent about Christmas and many times I found myself putting the tree up around December 20th or so. After having kids (especially as they grew enough to understand the excitement of the holiday), Christmas perked back up again. Suddenly it became magical for me like it used to be and I started putting the tree up the first weekend of December.

Yet here I am on the 14th of November and I’m now starting to do some prep work for Christmas. Oh, I don’t have lights and decorations up yet (though I did debate replacing my Fall door hanger with my Christmas wreath; I resisted the urge) and I certainly haven’t started my shopping yet (hahaha). However, Andrea over at A Peek Inside the Fishbowl came up with an amazing December challenge that sounds like a lot of fun.

Although we always get the Advent calendars with the little chocolates – two of course, one for each of them – I’m very interested in taking part in the Advent challenge.

Basically, instead of treats, you tuck a kid or family activity into each advent window/envelope/etc and on each day of December leading up to Christmas, you pull the daily activity out and do it. The key is to make the activities simple but fun – they don’t all have to be epic adventures and they don’t even have to necessarily require you to leave home. The point is to fill up those days full of anticipation with smaller moments of anticipation.

I still have to figure out all 25 activities that I’ll use but I’ve come up with some between seeing what others have done and ideas of my own. For instance, I have the obvious “decorate the tree and apartment” and “write letters to Santa” but I also have the outside-the-box “candlelight bubble bath for the kids” and “family game night – Wii edition”.

Not every activity has to be related to Christmas, although the majority of mine are. Basically as long as they’re fun, easy, and family-oriented they’ll be a hit.

I haven’t decided yet how to do mine. Andrea has a printable template to make paper envelopes where you can tuck the activities inside and I cut mine out; I might use it with some old Christmas bags, construction paper, and other papers I can find lying around. My other idea was to use baby/toddler socks. I have a bag of them and for some reason they’re still in Breanna’s drawer even though they either don’t fit or are missing a mate. I don’t know why I didn’t get rid of them but I’m thinking of using a long ribbon or a string of braided yarn and hanging the little socks with clothes pegs. That could be cute too, considering the use of stockings at Christmas time.

The only problem with this whole idea is that we’re not even halfway through the month of November yet and now I want to just get started already! This Advent calendar may be a great way to help with the anticipation of Christmas when December gets here but now what am I going to do about the anticipation of the Advent calendar?!

Are you in?

The bats have left the bell tower

Halloween of 2009 ended up being far better than I originally anticipated. For one thing, I felt like absolute crap on the 30th and most of the day on the 31st. I was really worried about whether I could actually manage to walk around with the kids trick-or-treating. The thing is, Halloween is and always has been one of my favorite days of the year. Christmas and birthdays are great what with all the presents and family stuff but for me it’s far more fun to get dressed up and eat obscene amounts of candy. Because of that I was actually pissed off that my body would dare to fail me by being under the weather on Halloween of all days.

Booooooo

Maybe it was adrenaline or something but I managed to perk up once I started gathering everyone’s costume pieces – including my own. George doesn’t dress up but Hayley went as a vampire, Breanna was a wee pirate, and I was the usual witch. Next year I might change it up and bring back the Catwoman costume (original Catwoman in purple, not Michelle Pfeiffer’s leather Catwoman – I’m not THAT brave!). We met up with our friends who were escorting their daughter-turned-devil for trick-or-treating.

BOO!

Happy Halloween!

We were also really lucky because it had poured rain for most of the morning and afternoon and I thought it was going to be a pretty soggy Halloween while awkwardly trying to hold an umbrella over everyone, but as we got in the car to go meet our friends, we were greeted with this beautiful sky.

Halloween was saved

That was really lucky.

We went to our usual trick-or-treating location, a nice big housing development where most doors are wide open with candy offerings. Our own area pretty much sucks, so we avoid the neighborhood altogether. We were out for about an hour and collected quite the haul; I think that for the sake of our kids’ teeth, we’ll have to step in and uh, “dispose” of some of it ourselves. I’m just thinking of their health of course. Really.

We ended the night by going to George’s parents’ house. They don’t get many people at the door so they usually divide up the leftover candy between the two kids and we know that they can eat them without inspecting them first.

Luckily, they were both tired enough from all the walking around and excitement that they both fell asleep within about 15 minutes of bedtime, sugar high and all. George and I intended to watch a horror movie, most likely The Last House on the Left but we were too tired so we’ll give it a shot tonight if bedtime goes smoothly (and early) enough. I don’t want to traumatize anyone by having one of the kids walk into the living room right in the middle of a scary scene.

I hope everyone had an excellent Halloween with lots of candies!

By the way, if you’re wondering about the title, it comes from this.

Total classic from my good old goth days, dancing beside the smoke machine!

In other news, I’m – as usual – participating in NaBloPoMo so you can expect a post a day for the month of November. Maybe that will kick-start my creativity again!

Busy long weekend

O Canada

Being Canadian, this past weekend was a long one. It was Thanksgiving so Hayley had both Friday and Monday off from school. Friday saw me scurrying around like a bit of a crazy person, preparing for company on Saturday. I worked and cleaned and worked and cleaned, and that’s about it for Friday.

George had to play that night, and I intended to get to bed early but I’m not particularly good at doing that if no one is around to shoo me off towards my pillow. Which is why, I suppose, I found myself – at 12:30 am no less – wiping down my kitchen cabinets, washing the kitchen walls, and cleaning the dust off my ceiling fan blades.

At 1 am I realized I was insane and headed to bed, except I heard a sudden knocking sound. The cat spends most of her time behind the washing machine so at first I thought she was scratching herself and banging her leg against the metal. Then I heard it again and looked out the peephole only to find two people I’ve never seen before banging on the door down the hall from us. One was a tiny little woman and the other was a very tall and burly man, the latter of which POUNDED loudly several times.

In all honestly, I’m sure it was the woman’s family, and maybe her phone wasn’t working and no one had heard from her in awhile so they had come to check on her. Still, I had no idea how they had gotten into the building since you need to be buzzed in, and they were freaking me out. It’s a sad state of the world today that while my first reaction was to want to open the door to inquire if they needed help or a phone or whatever, my second and more logical, safe reaction was to keep the door firmly locked. There are semi-regular home invasions in the Montreal area and while they are usually in houses as opposed to apartment buildings, I was taking no chances – especially with two kids in bed.

Eventually they left but I was pretty rattled (particularly since the woman came right up to my door and cocked her head as though she was listening for someone inside) so I didn’t really sleep until George got home. Whew.

On Saturday we had Hayley’s birthday party. We had wanted to have it the weekend of her birthday but it wasn’t in our post-holiday budget so we waited until now to throw her party; she didn’t mind. Since it fell on Thanksgiving weekend, one of our friends offered to roast a turkey and stuffing. It was delicious and a big hit. We also had George’s roast pork, my potato-onion casserole, rice, and mixed vegetables along with all the usual things (crackers, cheese, etc). There was definitely enough food! Another friend made a ridiculously amazing pumpkin cheesecake complete with Oreo cookie crust, caramel, chocolate ganache, and pecans. Gah!

Hayley was in heaven because most of her gifts were Barbie-related. She’s finally become super interested in playing with them which is kind of nice since I usually had no idea what to tell people when they would ask what she wanted as gifts. She got a Barbie dog grooming center, a beach cruiser, and a kitchen set, all for Barbies. Ecstatic! She also loved her cake. She wanted a beach cake since she had so much fun at the beaches in Halifax and that was pretty easy to do. I even decorated the “beach” part with some of the (boiled and washed) shells that we had picked up and a hand-drawn starfish. I also put a little Orca figurine in the “ocean” part of the cake. She was really happy!

Beach cake

On Sunday we went to George’s parents’ house to have Thanksgiving dinner. It was just the four of us, his parents, and a family friend so it was quiet but very nice. And really it’s never actually QUIET with kids, right? We ate a lot of good food, had some good laughs, and earlier in the afternoon I slipped out and took some pictures of the woods to capture the slowly changing leaves. I’m worried that we won’t have a particularly colorful Fall since the wind has been blowing the leaves off before they get super bright, but I’m still hoping.

Fallen

It was nice to walk in the woods alone with nothing but my camera for company!

Monday was pretty quiet and one of Hayley’s friends came over to play Barbies, but everyone was tired so it wasn’t as exuberant as it might have been otherwise. I was really happy once 10 pm came around and I was able to put my feet up and watch some prime time television (oh okay, it was “CSI: Miami”) and then go to bed.

This morning was rough since I was tired, had a wicked sore throat, and it was also freezing cold and raining out. Still, it was good to get back to routine again. It’s a short week so it won’t be too bad and it will be the weekend again before we know it.

I hope all my fellow Canadians had an equally wonderful Thanksgiving weekend! You can see all the birthday party photos over here and all the Thanksgiving photos are over here.

A weekend of Mother's Day

Pretty in pink

Considering the fact that Mother’s Day is only one day, I actually had a really great weekend altogether. My one disappointment was that I didn’t get to see my own mom due to circumstances beyond everyone’s control but hopefully it will work out for getting to see her next weekend. Other than that, Friday through Sunday were awesome.

George’s sister and her husband came for the weekend and since the kids were excited to see them, they ended up staying at George’s parents’ house for supper. Because of that, George and I actually went out to eat by ourselves. We didn’t go for a fancy meal – we actually just went to Kentucky Fried Chicken to try out that new Star Wrap thing. Verdict: More filling than it looks, pretty tasty, and was clearly invented by someone who was completely stoned (chicken strips, salad, tortilla chips, sauce, and cheese wrapped in a soft tortilla? Definitely made by a stoner). However, what made it great was that we were able to just EAT in peace without having to deal with anything else and we were able to talk without interruption. That’s a nice change of pace! Afterwards I took the dog for a long walk in the woods and then had an hour of quiet to finish up my work for the weekend before the kids came home.

Speaking of the woods, I found a new spot I had never seen before and was greatly confused by what was sitting in the middle of it. Because who the hell expects to see a REALLY old and completely rusted out car in the woods, especially when there are currently only footpaths, no roads.

Uhhh...

Weird.

Saturday was the day that my parents were supposed to come over for dinner so I passed the morning by cleaning up and getting ready for the visit while George did some shopping. When my mom called to tell me they couldn’t make it I thought maybe we could invite someone else to come over for dinner instead. However, when George’s sister showed up to take the kids out for awhile, we ended up asking if they could go over there for supper again. When they said yes and George and I were alone once again, I ended up being able to get the one “present” that I really truly wanted for Mother’s Day.

Not that, you pervs.

We went to see Star Trek! Seriously, I have been climbing the walls waiting to see it and I assumed the weekend would be too busy for me to get to the theater. When George asked me to go check the showtimes at the theater I would have done a backflip if I was physically able to perform one.

The show started at 6:40 and I was so paranoid that they’d sell all the tickets out that we were there about 40 minutes early. It didn’t sell out but the theater was definitely jam packed with only the first two rows empty (the rows where you can’t move your neck for three days because of craning to see the screen).

I can not lie to you: That movie was amazing. Seriously. It was exciting from start to finish and I’m not entirely sure that I blinked at all for the entire two hours because I was afraid I might miss something. George had to slip off to the washroom for a minute halfway through and when he said he’d be right back I think I asked him, “are you insane?!”

I only saw it a few days ago and I already want to see it again. Chris Pine as James T. Kirk? AWESOME.

The kids went to bed pretty quickly once they got home after 9 pm, so that was nice since it left me a few hours to enjoy a couple of glasses of the red wine that we had lying around.

On Sunday I didn’t really get to sleep in, but I did get to lounge around in bed for several hours and I dozed on and off which was nice. Hayley brought in all the stuff that she had made for me in school and a pendant that she and Breanna had picked out for me the day before, then Hayley made toast for me for breakfast in bed (George handled the coffee though!). A couple of hours later, George made bacon and eggs for brunch too, so I was pretty full for awhile.

We mostly just took it easy after that. We went over to his parents’ house for an hour later in the day because we had a DVD with all the photos that I took at his sister’s wedding (all 200+ of them!) and the photos from their honeymoon. It was fun to look back at all those pictures.

Once I got the kids into bed, I just spent the evening relaxing with some TV, the Internet, and a little more wine, and that was the perfect end to a really good weekend. In a move that is so utterly uncharacteristic of me that I wonder if I was abducted by aliens, I didn’t take any pictures of myself with the kids for Mother’s Day. I’m not sure why I didn’t, I guess I was just too busy. Busy being relaxed. And really, that’s not too bad in the end.

I hope everyone else had a great weekend too, especially the moms!

In other news, I have a review up for Colgate Max White toothpaste.

Also, I totally forgot to link to this when I wrote it, but I vented a slight grievance that I have with Scholastic over at the Canada Moms Blog.

Is it lunch time already? Good lord, where is the time going today?!
