Little Valentines

Valentine's Sisters

I’ve said it before, and I’ll say it again – Valentine’s Day, to me, is more fun with kids. I guess it comes from the fact that my own mother always made it a special day. We got little gifts, she decorated the kitchen table, and we always had a nice dinner. Having Hayley and Breanna here makes it special now too; they got gifts and ate a bit too much sugar, they got dressed up, and Hayley and I baked cookies and did themed crafts. It’s not that I’m the big anti-romantic, it’s just that I don’t feel a huge need to celebrate the day with George because our anniversary comes around eight days later on February 22nd, and to me that’s just more important.

Besides, it’s hard for me to get excited about a day that was hyped up by marketing executives who want you to believe the day is all about who has the biggest diamond, a diamond that was probably dug out of a mine by a 13-year-old boy in Africa and who was then shot just so De Beers could sell it in a necklace for $500.

(I do enjoy cinnamon hearts and chocolate though.)

Breanna got a chocolate heart (not that she got to eat much of it, being little and all) and a little mini lunchbox covered in pink and red hearts. She’s always walking off with the lunchboxes Hayley has, so I thought it would go over well. She thinks it’s hilarious to stick things in it. Meanwhile, Hayley got a chocolate heart too, a pair of heart-covered pens, and a set of Valentine themed scrapbooking supplies to do crafts with. She can spend hours doing crafts. I have no idea where she gets that from, *cough*.

After she made us Valentine’s with her new stuff, completely on her own with no help from us, she wanted to do more crafts so I showed her how to make flowers out of buttons and pipe cleaners. We made a TON of them. We stuck some of them into an upside-down egg carton piece and used it as a centerpiece for the table.

Flowers

She really enjoyed the day and was pretty disappointed that it wasn’t a continuation today. Still, at least she still had some craft stuff left – not to mention the metric ton she already had – and Hayley pretty much never needs a reason to make crafts.

I hope you had a great day too, and if you really hate the occasion, I hope you managed to avoid stabbing anyone.

  1. Very cute!…..Valentine’s Day is usually not a big deal for me either-except this year we had a huge snowstorm. Snow days….yay us.

I agree with you about kids up’ing the fun for things like Valentine’s Day. D and I were never much for it before, but it’s so much fun to do special crafts & silly activities with kids. Our Pajama Night was a hit & sure to be repeated!
