Hayley is so incredibly excited about going to school in September. I’m personally trying to keep myself from having to breathe into a paper bag over the fact that my first born child will be registering for SCHOOL in just a few weeks and that she will be heading off to a classroom in September, but Hayley is very excited. And really, anxiety and denial aside, I’m excited for her.
Except now there are two things that really tick her off about school. One is the fact that it’s a nut- and nut product-free zone. The one sandwich she really loves in peanut butter and she can’t take it. She’s being a big girl about it though, and she’s willing to try some other options to see what she likes enough to take to eat with her.
The other thing however, has really offended her terribly. The school doesn’t have uniforms but it does have a dress code. She can wear navy blue pants or a skirt. And she has to wear them with a white blouse or white polo shirt. Hayley is livid over this fact. “But I don’t like white shirts! I really don’t like them, Mommy!”
She will still huff mightily if you bring it up with her. Hopefully she’ll get over it by Fall!

Breanna has developed a sense of humor. She can’t say many words yet but she can say partial words. I always grab her butt when I change her diaper (after cleaning her, that is) and shout, “bum, bum, bum!” to her. She can’t quite get the “m” so she now reaches down and grabs it and says, “buh, buh!” and then she laughs exactly like Woody Woodpecker. The laugh is hysterically funny so I laugh and that encourages her. She keeps on doing it because of the reaction. She also calls her duck “dada” and laughs. Because I laughed, she now likes to grab random toy animals and call them all “dada”, laughing uproariously at her own little joke.
Today she started a new one. She recently (a few days ago?) finally caught on to the sign for milk so she’s been doing that when she wants to nurse, which is a nice change from suddenly crying and jumping up and down. Today she gave me the sign so I lifted her up and got ready to nurse her. Then she reached out, patted my chest and said, “buh, buh!” and then completely cracked up like it was the funniest thing in the world that she had just called my boobs a butt.
Little clown, yes she is.

Sometimes I take pictures that I love for the simple fact of recording our lives. Other times I take pictures that take my breath away and I wonder who these incredibly beautiful kids are. I took this during bath time yesterday.
I don’t know how I gave birth to such beautiful girls.

What a world. For years the number one sandwich, and my favorite to take to school, was the peanut butter or peanut butter and jelly sandwich. Now, because some kids are sensitive and might die if they were to grab one and eat it, the sandwich is banned? What are they going to do about wheat allergies, strawberry allergies, … continue in the vein. Just nuts … so to speak. Maybe if I weren’t so old I’d have a different take on it, but for now … just plain crazy. Good luck mama. lol
Well, you have beautiful children because they have beautiful parents 🙂
I am extremely grateful to parents and children who are willing to make the sacrifice of peanut butter/nuts. My daughter has a severe allergy. She went into anaphylactic shock when she was 3 because someone gave her a cookie containing nuts. She took one tiny bite and 10 minutes later she was on her way to the ER, difficulty breathing from her airway swelling up. Quite often with each exposure, the reaction is worse. A child’s life is worth more than a peanut butter sandwich. It truly is difficult for the allergic child as well, they often cannot participate in the cupcakes, candies, gingerbread house making that goes on at school.
I would suggest anyone who has questions to check out http://www.foodallergy.org/ for information. I cannot thank enough the parents and children who are so helpful and caring towards allergic children 🙂 It *does* take a village.
Loving the uniform grumbles!!!! I agree, white shirts are so not fun!
Oh! Great catch. (Makes me miss my camera mooooooore.)
Ah, toddlers with jokes. Gotta love it.
That is one gorgeous baby. She’s perfect.
I had to resort to the thinking of doesn’t really need a sandwich for lunch which was really hard. Here are some things that we put in instead of a traditional sandwich
Mini pizzas precooked and cold
Cheese crackers and apple
Buttered bun cheese or turkey/peperoni stick on the side
Alphagetti in a thermos
Tortilla wrap with butter and cheese on the side
You’d be surprised I’d thought he’d get sick of having the same stuff over and over again but he loves it and this is his 4th year at school. Actually he gets mad at me if I change the basics of lunch.

That is a great photo of Breebles. She is so cute. You’r so lucky that your kids don’t suffer allergies. Some people can just touch a nut and their hands will swell. It’s hard to believe that Halley will be in school next year. Seems like only yesterday you posted a photo of a new born on your lap with a caption of “look who’s here”.Time flys when your having fun.
Oops! I spelled Hayley wrong. Sorry
Spencer’s preschool is nut-free, too, and over the summer we had to come up with new lunch ideas when he went to a summer program there that included lunch. We found a roasted soybean spread at Trader Joe’s that was close enough to peanut butter to pass the kids’ taste test. Someone also suggested hummus (S didn’t like it, does Hayley?) and flavored cream cheese sandwiches.
At home, tho, we still eat PB&J for lunch at least five times a week ; )
That picture is gorgeous. You have a beautiful little girl.
And our school…they aren’t hip to the banned pbj sandwiches yet. I hear all these people talking about that and our school serves them for lunch. Cracks me up.
Another parent with a peanut-allergic child here. Thank you for taking it in stride as well as you are- and hopefully Hayley will too. I can’t believe Hayley is starting school in the fall! That’s exciting and fun, I’m sure. My daughter is on the borderline for birthday, so I think we’ll wait another year.
