September 30th, 2003 - Tuesday The end? Or the beginning? All of a sudden it's the end of summer. Technically, it's been autumn for several days, but it's only really felt like the summer was over for the past two days. It's the end of oppressive Montreal summer heat. It's the end of stupid humidity. This month also saw the end of Hayley's first year of life. But for me, it's so hard to consider this the end of anything. It's more like the beginning of my favorite time of year. Tomorrow will be October and there is no month that I love as much as this one. So much happens in October, and this year it's no exception. October is the month when the leaves change. I get to see a fair amount of it around here, which is an advantage to living in the suburbs rather than right downtown. Even better will be when we go up north in two weeks - then I'll really be able to see red, yellow, and orange leaves. I can't wait and I know I'll have my camera read as long as it isn't raining. October is a great month because it means Thanksgiving, which means turkey galore, visiting family, making turkey tetrazzini with the leftovers, and a three-day weekend. I love Thanksgiving. October is when George celebrates his birthday. This year I get to tease him about turning 41. I don't really care. If age difference meant anything at all to me, obviously we never would have gotten together in the first place. Still, it's fun to bug him, because he's already teased me a few times that next July I'll be turning 30. I like to point out that no matter how old I get, he will always be 12 years older than I am. Unfortunately, he's booked to play on the Saturday which is the day after his birthday, so we can't have a party. Still, maybe we can throw something together for the following weekend or something. Just a little party with drinks and food and friends. I also have no idea what to get for him, but I'll be thinking over the next few weeks. And possibly panicking. I had been wanting to get him a toaster oven (weird, I know, but he always wanted one!) but we just grabbed one at a garage sale for $15 this past weekend, so that's out. I'll figure something out. October is when the temperatures drop and I can start wearing jeans and jogging pants and sweaters again. I don't know why, but I really love the idea of breaking out the sweaters at this time of year and putting away the shorts and tank tops. I can also start wearing boots again. I will miss my sandals terribly, but that's okay. I can also start wearing light jackets again, like my black leather jacket and there's a fairly affordable fake suede jacket that I saw a couple of weeks ago that I'm hoping will still be in the store when I have a bit of spending money. Dressing for fall is fun and as much as I love the sunshine, it's just much easier to pile on a few layers in this season than it is to try to be comfortable in the sweltering summer. October is Halloween, which is my favorite holiday of all and it's also Samhaine. Samhaine being the Wiccan new year is all the more reason to look at this time of year as a beginning rather than an end. It's a Pagan beginning! This October in particular is busy too. We have a birthday party to go to at the end of the week for one of Hayley's friends. Next week she has an eye appointment, where I'm hoping they'll tell me I can reduce the amount of patch time for her eye strengthening, since the right eye appears to be doing so well now. She has a dentist appointment the week after, and another appointment for her Prevnar shot two days later. Busy, busy. As for the end of Hayley's first year, it's so hard to dwell on it. It makes me a little sad to think of how quickly that first year whizzed by, but at the same time, I'm just so busy trying to keep up with everything that she's doing and learning and experiencing now in the second year that I am too frazzled (in a good way) to worry about anything else. She's constantly asking "dat? Dat?" (I guess that "that" is technically her first real word - I was sure it would be "cat" what with her kitty obsession!) and wants to know what everything is called. She wants to sweep the floors and climb up the couches and pull everything out of the kitchen cupboards so she can sit in them and some days you can almost see the gears in her brain turning. It's amazing. So it's the end. It's the end of summer and the end of September. More importantly though, it's the beginning of the best season and the opportunity for new experiences. Bring 'em on, I say. Written for On Display: "Endings" << -Journal - Home - >>
