A Royally early morning

I’m so not a morning person. I haven’t been for as long as I remember. I got up earlier when I was a kid I suppose but for decades now I’ve been someone who loves to stay up late and sleep late the next day (this has been a problem for over eight years now, what with having two kids who enjoy mornings very much). However, this morning – even though I had nowhere to go for hours – I purposely got up with my alarm clock at 5 am so I could watch two people I’ve never met get married.

Yes, I got up before the sun just to see Prince William and Kate Middleton tie the knot.

Since I hadn’t gotten to bed until after 11:30 last night, I was groggy and bleary-eyed during the time that it took to boot up my laptop and head over to the live BBC stream on YouTube (God I love the Internet). As soon as I saw William and Harry in their car leaving Buckingham Palace I woke right up though and it was worth it to be a bit tired just to be able to watch their wedding.

I don’t know how to explain why I’m interested in the Royal Family. I wouldn’t want to be a part of it, I really don’t think I could handle the pressure, the scrutiny, and the whole deal of always being told how to act. William seems to handle it quite well, Harry appears to blow it off by being the unpredictable wild child, and from what I can tell so far Kate is going to deal with it with the self-confidence she has. However, despite not wanting to be a royal person myself (well, maybe when I was a little girl. Or when I’m washing dishes and wishing I had a house full of servants) I am fascinated by this family. It started with Diana and I remember hearing she had died as I sat in a bar downtown. I also remember getting up in the middle of the night to watch her funeral so of course I was going to get up to see her first born son marry his own princess-to-be.

The ceremony was wonderful and beautiful and I am a sap so I was a little teary in parts. The speeches and sermons and lessons were fantastic and I enjoyed every minute of it. I had to get Hayley ready for school but the ceremony was wrapped up before I had to usher her out the door. She missed the balcony kiss but Breanna and I watched it together (and then she re-watched it repeatedly on YouTube, I think I’m in for trouble in the future) and then I showed Hayley after school. The three of us did sit and watch the whole wedding together though, eating scones on the couch.

I also remarked on Facebook and Twitter that Harry was going to wind up single again if he didn’t put his eyeballs back in his head and stop drooling over Pippa Middleton – who looked unbelievably gorgeous.

I know not everyone is into watching the Royal Wedding and that’s okay, I don’t mind if people have no interest. However I saw a few people here and there snidely making comments about how it must be nice that we can all just forget about Libya, murders, Japan, etc etc since all news coverage was set aside to cover the wedding. I completely disagree. I don’t think it’s disrespectful to leave the tragedies for a few hours. They’ll still be there at the end of the day. Meanwhile I started my day with a big smile because for once I turned on the news channel while I prepared breakfast and instead of horror and despair I saw hope and love and joy. I think I might need to re-think my compulsion to watch the national news in the mornings because it really changed my outlook first thing out of bed. There’s something to be said about happy news for a change.

In the meantime, although Hayley enjoyed the wedding tremendously, it seems to have had a huge effect on Breanna. After the wedding was over (and once she was done staring down the balcony kiss), she changed out of her pajamas which is rare for her to do of her own free will. She pranced out of her room with a long fancy dress on, brushed her hair until it gleamed, and has been wearing a tiara for so many hours that I’m wondering if I’ll be able to convince her to take it off at bedtime. She has also been referring to herself as Princess Breanna and practiced curtsying a few times.

And in the time that it took me to type this up she watched this a few more times.

I think she fully intends to find herself a prince. Now I just need to get myself a really awesome fancy hat.

Chocolate and Earth Hour

I nearly forgot about Earth Hour this year but Hayley reminded me after they discussed it at school and then it was mentioned quite a bit in my friends feed on Facebook. A lot of people like to complain about Earth Hour saying that it’s a useless observation. They say that it doesn’t make any sort of substantial change as far as energy conservation goes because as soon as the hour is over people turn their lights, computers, televisions, etc. back on and forget about it.

Glow

I disagree though. Yes, many people will go right back to their usual ways but if even a small percentage decide that it’s nice to not have everything lit up like you’re trying to land planes, well that’s a chance for a difference. It’s also about education. I can talk about energy conservation with the kids at any time but having a special day set aside (such as this one or Earth Day in April) makes it more interesting for them. Hayley liked knowing that people all around the world were shutting off their lights at a specific time.

Anyway, our Earth Hour was low-key, no big gathering or party although that would have been fun too. We simply shut everything off and lit candles in the living room, and I brought out the little candle fondue set. I put chocolate in the fondue, cut up bananas, apples, and strawberries, and we sat together as a family just enjoying ourselves.

Chocolate-filled Earth Hour

Dipping

At one point they both wanted to use their DSi and although they could have theoretically done that (since they were charged up and required no power) I told them that would sort of defeat the purpose anyway. I explained that part of Earth Hour is to conserve energy but part of it is also to remind ourselves that we don’t need electronics every second of the day (that’s a good reminder for me too, me being the person who uses my iPod Touch to check my email as soon as I wake up, often before I even roll out of bed).

Candlelight yoga

We just talked and hung out, and at one point Hayley decided to do the before-bed yoga routine she’s been doing for about a month. It seemed like such a nice idea that I did a little bit of yoga myself. I think I may have to do candlelit yoga again soon.

Once 9:30 came around – actually it was almost 9:45 by the time we noticed the clock – we got the kids ready for bed and George and I did turn the TV back on for a movie. We didn’t turn all the lights back on though, just a little bit of light. We watched The Day After Tomorrow which, yes, is a ludicrous movie but it’s exciting and I thought it was kind of fitting to watch something that showed results of climate change after celebrating Earth Hour.

Next year I think it might be fun to invite some friends over for the evening; if our future home in Halifax has a fireplace (a lot of them do!) that would be nice too, to sit by the fire in the dark.

Did you celebrate Earth Hour? What did you do?

*******

One last thing – My sister (who has moved her blog to a new location) is 39 weeks along in her pregnancy today. She could go into labour at any moment (theoretically; she said that she doesn’t feel any signs that birth is imminent right now) and she put up a post asking for readers to guess when her baby will be born. If you could take a moment, please go take a guess and maybe you’ll be right! Breanna picked today, the 28th and Amanda’s father-in-law had a vivid dream that it would be today as well. I think Baby Guthrie will make an appearance on April 1st. What do you think?

Yoga update and recommendations

I had three people contact me last week one after the other asking about my yoga practice and if I had any suggestions for getting started. I guess my enthusiasm for doing yoga is very obvious! I still do it regularly; I don’t quite manage to do it every single day but I generally get in some sort of routine 5 or 6 days a week. If I go too many days without it I can definitely feel it. Not only do I physically find myself stiffening up and getting little aches and pains, I also feel it mentally. Yoga has been a huge factor in my ability to beat back the panic attack monster, but that’s a story for another day.

Eka Pada Galavasana

I’ve become mildly obsessed by inversions and balances. Above I’m halfway into Eka Pada Galavasana, or Flying Pigeon Pose. I can get this far easily. The challenge is trying to complete it. From my position in that photo I need to extend the back leg straight up behind me. Every time I try, my base collapses, the folded leg slides off my elbows, and I crash – laughing – to the floor. It’s okay, it will come. That’s another thing that yoga has taught me, that sometimes you just have to wait. Patience has never been easy for me but I’m learning.

Balance

Basically though, I’m having fun with learning how I can balance my own body. I’ve learned that aside from just needing to build enough arm and core strength to support arm balance poses, it’s mostly a combination of confidence (that still stands in the way of my headstand; I know I won’t succeed in that pose until I learn to stop being so afraid of being upside down like that) and basic physics. The pose above, Side Crow looks like it shouldn’t even be possible but once I found the center of gravity it became possible. It’s mind over matter a lot of the time, a physical meditation.

33/52 - Low crow

That’s why I love yoga. Meditation is amazing but I find it difficult to just sit and do it. Going through poses and sequences is moving meditation for me. Trust me, you can’t balance your own body weight on your arms in Crow (above) and keep yourself from face planting if you’re busy worrying about bills or work or whatever concerns are occupying your brain space. As long as you’re moving from one pose to the next you have to push everything else away and just be right here, right now. If I could do yoga 24 hours a day I would be the most relaxed person in the world.

As for the questions I’ve gotten about where to start, of course I have a few suggestions. I primarily use three online sources as teachers and each of them is great in similar and different ways at the same time. They all come from different styles of yoga originally but one thing they have in common is they teach a vinyasa flow style; while I am sure other styles are wonderful in their own way, vinyasa flow is the only thing I have patience for. I like to move when I do yoga!

  • Dashama Konah – Dashama was my first yoga teacher, and I still turn to her videos and her DVDs on a regular basis (this one for myself and this one when Hayley wants to do some too). If you want to study with someone who exudes complete passion for yoga every step of the way, you don’t need to look any further. She balances well between the physical side of yoga and the spiritual side. It was her guided meditation that made my once skeptical self believe fully in chakras; before her I would have rolled my eyes and now I know where each one is, what they do, and how to balance them. She has a great new program called Renew You that gives you 30 days of yoga videos as well as a complete lifestyle overhaul guide (with DVDs, books, and more). It’s not cheap, so you can also check out her free yoga videos on her YouTube channel to get a feel for her style first before taking the plunge. Not only is she my teacher, I’ve done work for her and feel lucky to consider her my friend.
  • Sadie Nardini – Sadie is incredible. I found out about her through a friend and have never looked back. If you want to approach yoga with the best possible alignment, she’ll get you there. Something that amazes me about Sadie is that she always knows when you’re about to screw up your pose by collapsing your elbows in or dropping your hips down too low, and she’ll give you a reminder just as you’re doing it. It’s the closest thing to having a teacher in person. She has a ton of great videos on YouTube that I’ve used; I also have one of her DVDs and I highly recommend trying out her 21 Day Yoga Body course where you pay whatever you can – as low as $1 or up to $100. It’s a great course that includes journaling exercises, lifestyle tips, and a yoga video every day for 21 days, and believe me it works.
  • Tara Stiles – Tara is a teacher that I don’t follow on a regular, consistent basis but she’s definitely someone I turn to when I want to do something a little different from my usual Dashama & Sadie rotation. If you’re someone who likes the idea of yoga but doesn’t want to deal with the spiritual side* or you’re put off by the Sanskrit names of poses, then Tara is a good start. She uses English names only and her approach has always been to make yoga accessible to the masses. Her slogan is “yoga anywhere” and although I do like some of the fluffier and spiritual sides of yoga, I appreciate her no-nonsense attitude. If I ever go to New York City I will take a class with her, but for now her YouTube videos and iTunes podcasts work just fine. I also own her book which is a great resource; on the other hand I bought one of her DVDs and while it’s beautiful to watch it’s not very helpful as an instructional resource. I think her new one with Jane Fonda is probably a lot better for learning.

*You may surprise yourself. I started yoga to deal with my anxiety issues and to get rid of the chronic ache I had in my legs. Like I said before, I used to roll my eyes at things like chakras and other similar “hippie-ish” concepts. Sometimes it sneaks up on you though. You might be taken aback by what you’ll get out of yoga besides the physical benefits. As for those physical benefits, yes they work too. Between Sadie’s course and Dashama’s Renew You program I officially have a six-pack, and I’m not talking about beer. Don’t believe anyone who tells you yoga can’t make a physical difference, because it absolutely can.

Other than the three teachers mentioned above, I’ve also been following Kathryn Budig when she writes over at Yoga Journal. I’m mostly a visual person for things like learning a pose so I rely on videos a lot but Kathryn has an incredible ability to perfectly describe what you need to do to get into a pose. I fully credit her for being able to get into Flying Pigeon at all.

Anyway, that’s my basic list of go-to people when it comes to yoga. Other than that though, it’s up to each person. More than once I’ve read that your greatest teacher is you and that’s true. The teachers will tell you how to do the poses but it’s up to you to devote yourself to learning and it’s up to you to listen to your body and learn when to keep pushing and when to back off. As long as you show up (whether showing up means in a class or in front of your TV/laptop), get on the mat, and put in the effort, the rest will come.

You can see my yoga progress in this set on Flickr. The difference between my early poses in January 2010 and now is huge.

Full disclosure: I am not being paid to promote anyone although the links to Amazon DVDs are affiliate links. The people I have mentioned here don’t know I’m writing this. I’m only listing them because people have been curious about what I do and who I recommend. If you have any suggestions of your own, please let me know in the comments!

Getting closer, one box at a time

Now that I’ve come forth and told the Internet that we’re moving to Halifax, I figured I could keep people up to speed on our progress (102 days to go, by the way!). We’ve lived in this same apartment for 12 years and as you can imagine that means accumulating a lot of flotsam and jetsam. When you’re staying put it’s easy to ignore the individual items taking up space even while you notice that you’re rapidly outgrowing your home. However when it comes time to actually pick things up and pack them in boxes to later be loaded on a truck and moved it’s much easier to stop and think about what you really need and/or love versus what you just have simply because it’s there.

With this being a bigger move than just heading to a different neighborhood I have to be careful and consider whether I *really* want to bring something with me. The truck we’ve rented is a 17′ cube truck from U-Haul and once it’s full that’s it. We can fit some things in the minivan but it’s a long-ass drive; we don’t want to be crammed and uncomfortable for all that time. If we were moving nearby we could do multiple trips but since it’s a 14-15 hour drive this is a one-shot deal. We’re not coming back for a second load.

I’ve done quite a bit of purging. Some stuff is going to the Salvation Army; I’m especially looking forward to unloading clothing that the kids have outgrown or that I no longer wear, as well as a ridiculous amount of books. The books will be a difficult purge, I’m kind of attached to them but I have to be realistic about how many I really need to keep.

Other stuff is being sold. We sold an insanely huge air conditioner and we also sold our dining set. The couple who bought it want to strip it and re-finish it so I’m really happy they were the ones to buy it. They have a small pickup truck at their disposal on the weekends so they’re taking it bit by bit, but so far they’ve taken the table and all the chairs (and now we eat in the living room, which is fine temporarily).

Still more things are just being pitched. This may sound petty but there are two people who are no longer friends of ours and it was just a really negative ending to a long-time friendship; over the years they gave us a lot of things and I just felt like I had a need to get rid of it all because of the now unhappy memories attached to those items. Thus, I pulled out a big garbage bag and wandered through the apartment pretty much tossing in everything that they gave us. Like I said, that initially sounds petty but it was very freeing for me.

Aside from purging, I’ve also packed several boxes up and put them in the spot where our table used to live.

Getting started

Not only are they packed, but I’m trying my hardest to be organized with this. Since we’re staying with family to start off, we’ll be storing the vast majority of our boxes and furniture and there’s no way to know exactly how long it will be before we move into our own place. After all that time there’s no way I’ll remember what items are in which box so I’m numbering them, color coding them by room, and keeping a list of what’s in each one. That way if I find myself wondering where the hell I put “XYZ” I can open the document up, do a search, and know that it’s in box #17.

The only reason I’ve stopped packing for now is because I ran out of boxes. I had these ones leftover from our last move back in July 2000 (that was fun NOT, carrying stuff down from the second floor, walking across the courtyard, and then back up four flights of stairs!) but we only had five. I am dying to get more so I can continue packing up stuff we want but don’t necessarily need to keep out over the next three and a half months.

So much to do and even though that seems like a long time, it’s really not that far away. Busy busy! Meanwhile we’ve officially sent in a letter to the landlord letting him know that we aren’t renewing our lease for next year. He was hoping we’d be leaving early in the month of June. He told me he’d be willing to make an arrangement with us (meaning a lower rent for that last month) if that was the case because then he could come in and do some renovations and repairs before new tenants move in.

Um, yeah. Sorry. We can’t leave until after Hayley’s finished school (did he really think we’d pull her out of school a few weeks before the end of the year?!). Besides, he had plenty of time to renovate and repair every time that we complained about something. If he didn’t have the inclination to do it for us then he can bloody well wait and make arrangements with the new tenants.

*******

In completely unrelated news, I posted a review for some NAOT shoes over here. Spoiler: I love them.

And in more unrelated news, I can not possibly explain to you why this video makes me laugh so hard that I cry. It just does. Warning: One moment of swearing, just in case you’re not into that.

Fuckin’ Tea

On that note I think I’ll go do some more purging and some tidying up since I know Murphy’s Law says someone will want to see the apartment if it’s covered in toys.

How to change your life

I’ve been sitting on something for awhile and if you know me at all then you know how hard that is for me to do. If you tell me a secret I will keep it, but if there’s something going on in my own life I want to blablabla about it.

A blogger who likes to talk about stuff going on in her life. Imagine that.

Anyway, it’s very big news. Probably the biggest news I’ve had in years. It’s big enough that we had to tell some people offline before I could go and shout it from the rooftops to the masses.

No. I’m not pregnant. Seriously, no. But instead of spelling it all out right away, first let me give you all a hint.

Weekend of good times

This weekend we went to celebrate a friend’s birthday with our usual circle of awesome people. It started after supper and involved a lot of delicious sweet treats which is always a huge hit.

I heart you

The birthday boy got a new guitar as his main gift so that went really well with the live jam that went on down in the basement a little later in the evening. The last time George played anywhere I really wanted to go but didn’t have a babysitter so I missed it. This made up for it.

Strum

Purple Rain

(That would be me in the corner filming some of the music action.)

Quite some time ago George started practicing “Purple Rain” at home. I have always loved Prince and naturally that’s one of my favorite songs that he did (#1 favorite being “Darling Nikki” which is less appropriate for gatherings that include young children). Since I hadn’t been able to hear him do it in a public setting I requested (demanded) that they play it at the party. As a result I got video of an excellent acoustic version of the song and naturally I wanted to share it.

It was a great night. A late night, but great nonetheless. Hayley had too many cupcakes and Breanna barely made it up the stairs before passing out from exhaustion but that aside we all had a great time. Everyone’s birthday should involve a bit of live music.

In a nutshell

I knew I hadn’t gotten around to updating for awhile but I hadn’t realized just how long it had been until my sister emailed me to see if I was okay. When your own family member (especially one who has a tendency to skimp on blogging herself, ahem!) notices your unplanned leave of absence you know it’s been awhile. Obviously I can’t catch you up on every single day, nor would you want to know every last detail, but I can update on some of the bigger moments since we flipped the calendar to 2011.

We celebrated New Year’s Eve at home which is nothing new for me. I’m not really into going to parties or bars on that day although I have always said I’d love to do Times Square for the ball drop just once before I die. What was different this year was getting to celebrate with George. The thing with being a musician is that it’s not unusual to be booked for a gig on a night like New Year’s Eve. Luckily for me it didn’t happen this year so for the first time since Hayley was three months old we got to ring in the new year together.

We kept it low-key. We introduced the kids to E.T. and they both loved the movie (Hayley was so enthralled that she brought home a book about him from the library this week!). We also enjoyed some appetizers, most of which were Indian, so I was very happy indeed, and the girls drank ginger ale from champagne glasses while George and I had some red wine. We hung out in the living room until Dick Clark’s Rockin’ New Year’s Eve came on. It’s a tradition of mine to watch that and even though Ryan Seacrest has taken over most of the hosting duties I still can’t help but put it on. I had a wee fangirl moment while watching New Kids on the Block, what can I say?

Family

This was also the first year that Breanna managed to stay awake until past midnight. Last year she held on until 11:30 and then passed out cold on the couch. She was very proud to be able to celebrate fully this time.

*******

On January 8th we had another first; we left the girls with the first babysitter they’ve ever had that isn’t related to them. Our friend was celebrating his birthday at a nearby bar so the girls had a sleepover at their friend’s house and her cousin babysat them. He’s a really good kid and they all love him so it worked out well. It was Breanna’s first sleepover ever and she did very well.

Music

At the bar we listened to some live music and had a few drinks, and it was fun. We stayed until a little after 1 am and then finally headed home after the band finished their second set. It was very weird to come home without any kids but I was so tired that I fell asleep five seconds after I hit my pillow.

Successful sleepover

The next morning we went over to pick up the girls and stayed for breakfast. Breakfast is probably my favorite meal ever, but I’m not a fan of actually making big breakfasts (which is why pancakes are usually supper here). Having someone else do it makes me very happy, which is why it’s awesome that George frequently makes bacon and fixes up egg and cheese “McMuffins” on weekends. At their house I enjoyed a big plate of French toast and bacon and home fries and it was a good way to start an otherwise very lazy day.

*******

The biggest thing that has happened since I’ve been horribly neglectful towards my blog is that on Friday (this past one, the 14th) I had an actual professional photo gig lined up. A friend of mine from the school does marketing for a local restaurant (the food is fabulous, if you live in the area you should check it out) and they needed a photographer to capture some fun moments. They had a lot of nice shots of food but no ambiance photos of people enjoying the food or just having a drink at the bar. That’s where I came in.

Let me tell you something: All work should be as much fun as that night was. I got there at about 6:30 just so I could test the lighting and figure out some good places to set up. The actual shoot started at 7 when my friend got there along with four young girls who were willing to model for me along with any clients who were okay with being photographed (only one table said no, everyone else was happy to pose). I had fully intended to shoot for one hour. At the most I thought I might extend to an hour and a half, wrapping up at 8:30. It was 9:40 when George picked me up. I was having such a blast that we just kept going and going.

I took almost 400 photos and managed to whittle them down to 165 to present to my friend for her perusal. I’ve been asked to keep my photos under wraps until they officially launch their campaign on February 1st so as hard as it is, I’m sitting on my hands (figuratively speaking, otherwise it would be difficult to type!). All I know is I’m very excited because these will be used in campaign on the restaurant’s website, their Facebook page, AskMen.com, and Elle Quebec.

Other than that, the only other news around here is of the less fun variety. Starting on Sunday, Breanna quickly developed a nasty gastro and it has since spread. I am not feeling well at all today (I even canceled going to a Governing Board meeting up at the school which I don’t like to do), and Hayley started coming down with it tonight. I’ve already called the school and left a message to say that she’s not coming in, that way we can all just sleep tomorrow morning. I know exactly what she has, there’s no point in waking her up to see if she can go in.

Hopefully it will pass quickly and we’ll all be feeling 100% by the weekend!

(Photos from New Year’s Eve can be seen here; meanwhile more photos from our night out are here.)

Not keeping up very well

So apparently this year I’m sucking at the Holidailies thing. I just haven’t felt like updating. I’ve been too busy with other things during the day and then by evening I’m kind of tired and brain-dead.

On the other hand I can’t quite think of anything in particular that I did that would keep me from sitting down and typing up a quick update. Ah well.

Anyway, I haven’t dumped or edited any photos in a couple of days either so I don’t have anything pretty to share. I do have one brief story I don’t want to forget though.

On Tuesday I took Breanna up to the school with me and handled the PPO used toys sale from 8 am until 11:30. Breanna came with me last year and had fun; this year was even better. She sorted money into the cash box, I’d tell her what to give back as change, and she helped bag up purchases if someone had bought a bunch of small stuff.

The entire sale went well in general and I do love watching kids shop. It’s interesting to see what they’ll be attracted to and it’s fun to listen to them excitedly chatter over their finds.

However, there was one little boy in particular – probably grade two – who was so sweet that I just wanted to fold him up and put him in my pocket. He had bought a handful of very stereotypically boy things. He was carrying around a couple of Transformers, a Spiderman figure, and a dinosaur. He seemed pretty thrilled with his haul. He had 50 cents left and wanted to know what he could get with it. I showed him the 25 cent table and said he could get two things there or that he could get one thing from the 50 cent table next to it.

A few minutes later he hopped up to me and joyfully held up something very different from his other things. It was a little black purse, about the size that Paris Hilton uses to cart around her little dogs. On one side it had a pink silhouette of a girl and on the other side it had a pink French poodle. The entire thing was covered in sparkles.

He excitedly told me that he had picked it up at the 50 cent table and that was what he wanted. I smiled and said okay and took him two quarters. Then he grinned and bounced a little on the balls of his feet and whispered, “it’s for my mom, she likes pretty purses and this one is REALLY pretty.”

Well. I was in the throes of PMS so it took everything I had in me not to just CRY. Instead I patted him on the shoulder, told him the purse was absolutely beautiful, and sent him off to catch up to his class who had left already.

It was the sweetest thing that I saw all day and I love that a little boy would buy something like that for his mother. If it was me, I would carry that purse EVERYWHERE just because of the thought.

Sometimes my faith in the world is restored by the simplest things.

A day outdoors in the crazy weather

Pretty

The weather was a little bi-polar up here today. This morning it was snowing and it was actually the kind of snow that I like, with the big, fat flakes that float down slowly. It was also quite warm out. We had planned our Advent activity today to be sledding but I wasn’t sure how that would work out since they were calling for at least two hours of freezing rain in the afternoon. In the end George said we should go anyway so we set it up with our friends to meet at a nearby park and after a tasty brunch (George fried up some bacon then made us egg and cheese “McMuffins”, yummy) we were suited up in our snow suits and in the van.

The kids

I’m so glad we went. When we got there it was overcast but nothing more than that and the temperatures were still holding at reasonable levels. We were there for an hour and a half and in that time we also saw some mixed precipitation (that’s a mix of snow and rain for those of you who aren’t well-versed in Canadian winters), followed by ice pellets (a little painful on the face while zipping down a hill on a saucer but bearable), then just overcast skies again. Right as we were leaving there was a light pattering of rain and then that cleared up before we even got home.

Chain gang

Despite the weird transitional weather we had so much fun. The ice pellets lasted all of 15 minutes so I’m glad we didn’t change our plans based on the forecast. This is the second time in a row that a forecast has been wildly wrong. Last week they said to expect about 5 centimeters of snow and we got over 30. This week they warned of a 25 centimeter storm, then changed to a bit of snow and the freezing rain, and we ended up with little to worry about. Silly meteorologists!

Woohoo!

I love sledding and other than a few minutes of break time here and there I pretty much spent the whole time going up and down the hill. We were four adults and four kids, plus we spent some time swapping sleds with another dad and his two sons, so it was pretty much a blast. Definitely a great Advent idea!

Full set over here.

Advent Day 5 & 6, plus a great example of giving

Today is the first day of Holidailies, and that means I’ll be doing my best to post daily or almost daily from now through January 5th. A lot of people start Holidailies with an introduction for new folks dropping by. I don’t normally bother but I saw that Carrie had done an intro so here’s my brief version for anyone who hasn’t been reading here before.

I’m Sherry, I’m 36, and I live in the Great White North. Okay, it’s just Montreal, it’s not THAT high up there, but it’s been snowing all day, so it’s definitely pretty white out there. Included in this blog you will find frequent references to George (my husband), even more frequent references to Hayley and Breanna (my 8- and 5-year-olds), and a lot of random blathering in between. We recently got a Border Collie/Black Lab mix that Breanna named Winnie, I work from home as a freelance blogger (not this blog!) and content writer, I obsess somewhat over yoga, I am highly involved in Hayley’s school (I’m the secretary for the PPO, co-chair for the Governing Board, and I volunteer for a lot of the events up there), and I can’t leave home without a camera (and the few times that I do I almost always regret it).

Until Christmas comes you’ll find me updating about our family’s Advent Activity calendar. You can read more about it over here but the basic gist of it is each day we open an envelope that contains some sort of activity either just for the kids or for the whole family. If you feel like catching up, check out the Advent category.

Yesterday was our fifth day with the calendar and our activity was really just for the kids since neither George nor I joined in this time. It involved going from this:

Advent activity day 5

To this:

Sundaes!

It was Build-Your-Own-Sundae time! I scooped out the ice cream and the kids added sliced bananas, marshmallows, broken pieces of candy cane, chocolate sauce, and of course sprinkles.

Proud

Yum

It was not surprisingly a big hit, and surprisingly the sugar rush didn’t keep them up all night.

Today was day six and I had chosen a Christmas movie (just a short one since it’s a school night) as our activity but when Breanna opened it up the kids both decided they’d like to repeat Saturday night’s family Wii challenge instead. We ended up saving the movie for the weekend instead. Alas, there was a bit of a meltdown near the end, but it’s still fun.

In other news, today was one of the best days I have ever spent up at Hayley’s school. A local restaurant (Table 51 for Montreal peeps – you should go, the food is delicious and the staff is awesome) sponsored a hot pasta lunch for all the kids at lunch time. They served pasta with tomato sauce, parmesan cheese, bread rolls, juice boxes, and even red velvet cupcakes for dessert.

More than that though, they really wanted to re-create a restaurant experience because some of the kids in our school have probably never been to a proper restaurant in their life. Since we couldn’t exactly bus them over to the restaurant because of logistical issues, they brought the restaurant to us. Several staff members – wait staff, chefs, etc. – came to the school along with all the food and it was incredible. We put tablecloths out on the tables, there were menus, and we had music playing. The kids all sat down and the staff served all the kids just like they would in a restaurant. Meanwhile, the parent volunteers just kept things moving by bringing plates up to the front table for the wait staff to grab.

The kids had a blast. Everyone was smiling and enjoying the food, and they especially loved being served. I think it made them feel really special. One anecdote had a few of us a bit teary-eyed; one of the boys who often shows up with a very sparse lunch or no lunch at all because of financial issues at home was so grateful for this experience that he sat at the table with his hand pressed together and he prayed to God, thanking Him for the delicious food and all the kind people who came in to bring it to him. It was so touching and that one moment was worth every bit of effort.

The whole thing went smoothly. I was there by 9 am, things were set up and the pre-cooked food was heated back up, and we were able to serve 350 people by the end of lunch hour. We even got to sit down to eat our own servings, clean up, and get out of there by 1:15 pm. It was a great time.

So.good

Red Velvet

By the way, that was the first time I had ever tasted a red velvet cupcake and I now understand the hype. I am completely RUINED for any other cupcake from now on.

Awesome group

Thanks Table 51, you guys were amazing!
