I’m pretty sure I mentioned it back when we actually didn’t but I’m too lazy to check the archives – anyway, a couple of months ago we signed Hayley up for soccer. She’s always loved kicking a ball around, always refers to it as actually being soccer, and one of her favorite Backyardigans episodes is the one with the Soccer Monster (her absolute favorite one is The Tower of Power with Dr. Shrinky and Yucky Man, and the state of her room makes this fitting; Yucky Man indeed).
She was really interested in playing soccer some day but I thought they had to be older until we found out it actually starts at four years old, surprisingly. Off we trotted to the registration where a giant room was FULL of kids and parents and coaches and papers and it was insane. I had no idea so many people in our area played. We got her all signed up, and that was it until May.
Now we’ve gotten our call for the orientation this week where she’ll meet her coach and team mates (two of her friends are on the team so that will alleviate any shyness, I hope), get her uniform and a soccer ball, and they’ll just play a bit. All we have to do is show up with shin guards and cleats.
That’s fine. This weekend, though, is the Soccer Festival where there are a bunch of games, all for fun (well, you would assume fun is the main goal at age four and five anyway, you know?), just to get everyone out and playing. Seeing as how none of the kids on her team have ever played before, I can’t imagine that it’s going to be a very serious game since they won’t have had any practice time or real rules laid out.
Then I was shocked to find out that she has FOUR games this weekend. Four! For my four year old kid! The first one is Saturday at 8 am, which is also HolyCrapO’Clock for a Saturday morning, jeez. I’m really looking forward to being a Soccer Mom, but I think that this weekend I may be a really Sleepy Soccer Mom. I wonder where I put the travel coffee mug. Or maybe there’s a Tim Horton’s on the way to the park. Yikes!
I’m truly hoping that this is just because of the festival and that it won’t be a regular thing to have four games in one weekend, because wow.
In the meantime, I can’t wait to take a picture of her in her soccer uniform!
If she’s doing Timbits Soccer, there’s a good chance that there will be coffee AT the games. 🙂
I’m sure you’ll all have a fantastic time! A couple years ago I got to attend a soccer game of my boyfriend’s then 7-year-old niece, and it was one of the most positive things I’ve ever witnessed. There were cheers for every effort made regardless of the outcome.
In europe, it seems to be the parents job to insult the referee during soccer matches 🙂
I never played but a lot of other kids at school did, and they were pretty good at it too.
They learn some amazing tricks in soccer, like bouncing a ball on your foot without letting it touch the floor, I can’t wait for the video of Hayley pulling one of those off 🙂
