Question and Answer

Okay so I asked you guys for questions and now I have to actually think and come up with answers. Sheesh.

1. Chantal asked: Who is your favourite Beatle?

Answer: Paul. That’s probably predictable, but true. I love his voice, I like his position on a lot of things, and I am so dreadfully sorry that he was insane enough to marry someone without a pre-nuptial agreement because I think Heather Mills is a lying bitch. I hope she falls flat on her face on Dancing With the Stars.

2. Closs asked: What do you like best about where you live?

Answer: I like Montreal’s diversity and multicultural atmosphere. It’s a great place to immerse yourself in a lot of different ethnic ways of life without even leaving your home city. I particularly love our Chinatown. It’s nowhere near as big as the one in Toronto (you can walk from one end to the other in under ten minutes) but the food is good, the prices are ridiculously awesome, and the atmosphere is great.

3. Liz asked: Just curious….how do you plan your day around blogging?

Answer: I don’t really. I do it when I can. If there’s something I really want to write, I try to do it when I get the chance. If it seems like it’s not going to happen because my blogging bug has bad timing, I at least try to jot the topic down on a paper – I have tons of old envelopes and post-it notes with little scrawls about this blog topic or that blog topic. Then I go and write about it later. The easiest time is first thing in the morning when the kids are in their best mood or at night when they’re in bed. And any design stuff generally happens at night.

Whew, lots of fun questions, keep reading…

4. Monica asked: You seemed to be pretty calm about Breanna’s fever. I’m more of a freak. Upon the sign of any temperature over 101 (in one my children), I’m off to the doctor. I want to rule out strep throat and ear infections, among other things. How did you become so calm and get to the point where you take more of a wait-and-see approach? I envy you!

Answer: I guess I just don’t look at a fever as being a dangerous thing most times. A fever is just the body’s way of fighting off some sort of bug, and usually I just leave them alone. I generally only treat a fever at bedtime so the girl in question can sleep and the only reason I gave Breanna regular doses of Motrin was because she was also in pain with her teeth coming in. That helped too, knowing that it was most likely the teeth because 1)I could see them coming through, and 2)she had no other symptoms.

Admittedly, I did get a bit nervous on Sunday, but it turned out okay in the end. I’m not always so calm. Remind me to tell you about the absolute meltdown I had when I dropped Hayley at 6 weeks old. 🙂

5. Heidi asked: Did you grow up in the Province of Quebec or some other province? How is it if you grew up in Quebec that your primary language is English? I thought French was mandatory (?) and the primary language there. What about George? Is French his primary language or English? Is Hayley bilingual? Will school for her be in English or French? (Can you tell I’m fascinated by the whole bilingual thing in Quebec?)

Answer: JEEZ Heidi, thanks for the EASY question. 😉 I grew up in Quebec. I was born in Toronto but my parents came back to Montreal when I was 6 months old because my father really hated it there and missed home. My first language is English because my family is English. French is the most common primary language here but there are lots of English-speaking people. When I went to school I was in French immersion (as is Hayley’s school). I was taught completely in French from Kindergarten until grade three, then we started doing mixed English and French. In high school, I was two grade levels ahead in French classes and in my final two years of high school my French classes were the same curriculum as kids in fully French schools. George’s first language is also English.

Hayley is not bilingual because we don’t speak French at home; with both of us being English it just seemed weird. She can say words here and there but she doesn’t really speak it. I’m not worried because 1)I’ve seen her play with kids who can’t speak English and they just understand each other and have fun anyway, and 2)I was the same way but starting in French at age five is much easier than when you’re older and kids generally pick it up very quickly.

(I am tired now and must take a nap.)

6. Beth asked: whats your favorite place to visit in the state? would you ever move there? name your 3 favorite traits your kids got from you?

Answers: I haven’t been to many places in the U.S. Out of the ones I’ve been to, I have a tie. One is Vermont, which is where I spent a week each summer for years at my aunt and uncle’s trailer in a recreational park. They were right on Lake Champlain and we had so much fun every year. I miss that. The other is Washington, DC. I visited in college for our history course (which made no sense since it was Western Civ and had nothing to do with Washington). I had so.much.fun that I get all excited just thinking about it. I love how all the museums are completely free. I loved Arlington cemetery, the Smithsonian, the Vietnam memorial, and the Holocaust museum. I really didn’t want to come home even though I was exhausted after visiting everything in two days on almost no sleep. I miss it and would love to go back (but this time NO Roy Rogers, blargh).

I doubt I would ever move to the U.S. Never say never, but I love Canada and I would really miss our free health care. 🙂

My three favourite traits that my kids got from me? Hayley: artistic creativity, goofy sense of humour, love of cooking. Breanna: also a goofy sense of humour, the joy of dancing, and uh… I haven’t pinned down a third yet.

7. Merrilee asked: When are you going to get married? Where are you going to get married?

Answer: Mom, is that you? (just kidding!) When? I have no idea. I don’t feel a huge burning need to do it. It’s something I would like to do someday but I don’t think it’s an absolute necessity because we’re a family with or without it. Where? Well it was supposed to be my grandmother’s backyard, so uh… I don’t know. I’d love to do a destination wedding with just us and then have a party when we get back. Who wants to pay for us? Vegas, Mexico, who knows?

8. Uma asked: If you could write the script for a TV show that you generally watch (and enjoy), which one would you chose?

Answer: Assuming I could actually do it justice, Criminal Minds. That would be really hard though because as much as I love the show I don’t think I could really write a good crime episode. That’s why my fanfics are always fluffy and involve lots of behind-the-scenes romance. I can write a great scene with two people making out. Evidence and profiling? Not so much.

9. Lydia asked: Why is your comments section in German?

Answer: Ha! Oops, thanks for letting me know! That’s what I get for using a German template and not checking everything. Hee, all fixed!

I totally need a tea now, but that was fun.

  1. Heh, thanks for answering all my questions. 🙂 I think it’s cool that Hayley will go to a French immersion school and be bilingual. And I have no doubt that she’ll catch on in no time. Language doesn’t seem to be a barrier for young children. I’ve only ever been across the Quebec border when visiting a “friend” in Ottawa, but it seemed to me everything was French. 😉 I didn’t realize there was such a large population of English-speaking people too. 🙂 (Everyone else I know who is from Quebec seems to speak French. 🙂
