The land of the tired
Yesterday Hayley took a nap that lasted until about 3:30 pm. By 8:30 I had her in a bath. Afterwards, she played a bit and then displayed signs of being tired by rubbing at her eyes and yawning. I seized the opportunity and immediately whisked her off to bed, thinking that it would be relatively painless to get her down.
That was at 9:00. At 10:30 I came out and left her with George so I could pee because she still hadn't gone to sleep yet. Gah.
She went to sleep around 11:30 finally. It was very frustrating but I figured that at the very least she would sleep in a bit longer this morning, something she often does when she has a bad night.
Wrong again! She woke up at 4:15, wanting to get up. I co-erced her back to sleep by a little before 5 am, and then she was up for good at 6:15. I let her play in the bed, dancing to the music on Discovery Kids until a little past 7, at which point I brought her out to the living room so that I could try to fake consciousness with a cup of coffee.
George was home today so he went back to sleep for a couple of hours. Hayley did too. Of course! By then I was up, and caffeinated. She fell asleep in my lap while nursing so I decided to just stay there so that she could snooze rather than risk moving her. She slept for 45 minutes, waking up at 10:15.
That was her ONLY nap of the day. Luckily, George took her for a couple of hours to his parents' house so I had a nice long bath - that's something I haven't done since I was pregnant. I usually just shower and the only baths I had after Hayley was born were baths that I took with her. It was really nice to just sit in really hot water with my bath bomb fizzing around me, and relax.
I sort of wanted to take a nap but I don't nap well. I can get up and go back to sleep in the morning but if I nap in the afternoon I usually wake up feeling even worse. Instead, I had a quiet lunch by myself and watched my soap, then I read my book By the time Hayley came home (having eaten a light lunch of apples and bananas), I felt a little refreshed.
Still, I had about four hours of sleep and it wasn't even four straight hours, so I'm pretty damn tired now.
Hayley was tired too. By the time she decided she wanted a nap, it was about 4:30 and that was no good - if she napped then, she'd never go to sleep for the night. I had to distract her to keep her awake. She wasn't very interested in supper and cried to be let out of her high chair. I felt so badly for her because she was obviously overtired.
She was also dealing with teething which never helps anything. We gave her some Children's Advil and hoped for the best. She was still cranky so I gave her a nice bath. She had a lot of fun playing with her ducks for awhile but then she got some soap in her eye and that was the end of that joy.
She was in her pajamas by 7 and rubbing frantically at her eyes. I laid her down in bed and she was asleep by 7:15.
My poor tired baby.
I wish I could have taken a picture of her though. She's very fascinated by the ceramic pumpkin-shaped candle holders that I have out for Halloween, but obviously she can't touch them. To ward off her frustration, I went to the dollar store and bought a pack of those tiny plastic pumpkin candy holders as well as a large pumpkin that hangs in the window. She loves them both. She loves them enough that she wouldn't let go of the candy holder that I had given her during the diapering and she held on tightly to it while I nursed her down. She fell asleep with a plastic pumpkin in her hand - it was so cute. Some kids sleep with a teddy bear or a blankie. Mine sleeps with plastic pumpkins. Hey, why not?
I have an entry that I really need to write, because it's about something that made me really upset and angry. However, I'm so incredibly tired now. We ate supper at 5 which is about an hour and a half earlier than normal so that George could go to his band practice. As a result, I feel like it's much later than it is and the fact that I'm dragging isn't helping that. I think I'll just get myself ready for bed and write the entry in my head on a day when I'm more coherent. It's an important matter to me so I'd like to be able to write it well.
I'll leave you with some pictures instead.
Hayley last night in her little pink pajamas.
Sheer delight and giggles over her pumpkin friend in the window (it was pulled down and kissed and stepped on and hugged and dragged everywhere about 30 seconds after I took this).
