House of Sickness

What a month this has been. Claire caught a cold at the very beginning of daycare and her nose hasn’t stopped running since. She has also had two eye infections, and then this week she developed a fever followed by a rash. The beginning of this week was really rough – she was awake a lot on Sunday, and then her sleep was even worse on Monday night, so much so that we ended up bringing her into our bed. She still woke up countless times during the night, but at least we were all together and we could all catch some sleep in between. On Thursday night, she woke up often, and then decided she wanted to play at two in the morning.

The fever and rash appear to have been roseola. Supposedly something like 90% of kids get this, and it is contagious, but since it’s not particularly risky, our daycare still accepted Claire. The spots are nearly completely gone, and didn’t bother Claire at all. Her mood has been improving, and at last, I am seeing that happy baby I know so well. She still isn’t eating huge amounts at lunch, but since her appetite really diminished earlier, I guess it makes sense.

Also earlier this week, after having turned her nose up at lunch at daycare and only wanting baby cereal with fruit for supper, she ended up eating quite a lot. When she finished her dessert (yogurt and fruit), she was squirming in her seat, so I brought up onto my lap while I finished my frozen yogurt. All of a sudden, she was throwing up a la Monte Python, The Meaning of Life “The Autumn Years” (word to the wise for the uninitiated – don’t watch that video while eating). She seemed to feel totally fine after that, though, so we figured that she just ate too much and her belly protested.

Well, maybe not. She’s fine, but I started feeling achy and had a bit of a fever last night, and I felt a little nauseous while getting groceries. After putting Claire down for a nap when I got home, I decided to have a nap. It was only supposed to be for 45 minutes, but ended up being an hour-and-a-half. I had some lunch when I got up, but since I was still feeling nauseous, I only ate a little bit. I guess it was a little too much because not long later, I was kneeling in front of the toilet.

My belly feels slightly better – I managed to keep down a piece of toast with peanut butter earlier, and I might try a little bit of supper and see how it goes. I am still really rundown and can’t wait to go to bed. Our plan was to watch “X-Men First Class” tonight, but I think it’s a long movie, so maybe not.

Oh, and one of Neal’s eyes is irritated and red, so he might have an eye infection (lovely timing since he’s going on his leadership course on Monday!) and he is putting Polysporin eye drops in just in case.

But! The positive thing is that Claire seems much more like herself. I am very happy to see her smiles!
