Er, maybe she's tired?

Between The View this morning and just about every recap I’ve read, it seems that anyone who watched The Golden Globes is discussing the fact that Angelina Jolie seemed very unhappy and snippy last night. I could hazard two guesses as to why she was perhaps not falling all over herself to be the queen of smiles and to accomodate every red carpet question with an answer:

1. She’s a mother. She’s a mother who gave birth not that long ago. It’s entirely possible that she’s bloody well tired. Maybe Shiloh was up most of the night for the past week. I realize that celebrities have nannies and hired help so they don’t have to do as much as your average mother, but I’m pretty sure that unless the baby is sleeping through the night, neither is Angie. Also, having two kids myself, I can hazard a guess that her other two kids might be acting a little less than angelic as they get used to having a new baby sister in the house.

Also, she gave birth recently enough that – hello? – she may actually be battling a bit of post-partum depression. While I didn’t get to any major blackness in my post-partum months, I did deal with a lot of very weird anxiety. I know that had I been all dressed up in front of cameras a few months after having Breanna, I may very well have been just as “sullen” as she was reported to be. Who knows? Apparently she was unhappy with the dress that she had; if she’s dealing with even a slight hint of PPD, that may have translated to an entire meltdown of “Oh my GOD, I hate this dress and my body IN this dress, and Brad I hate you too for not understanding why I hate this dress, I JUST WANT TO STAY HOME!” Not that I ever freaked out about something like clothing after having a baby. Um, no. Not me.

2. Maybe she’s fed up of all these inane questions, like Ryan Seacrest asking her if she cooks eggs and bacon for the kids every day like she’s some sort of June Cleaver. She finally answered with “I give them cereal” after he pretty much shoved the microphone down her throat, but you know, maybe she just doesn’t want to be the one to answer all the questions since she was there to support Brad’s movie.

I don’t know. I’ve always been a huge fan of hers and I guess I just think maybe the press could cut her a little slack for not having the million dollar megawatt smile on 100% of the time. Besides, every time the camera flashed their way, both she and Brad were smiling while watching the awards. It’s not like she was skulking around tripping people and pouring martinis on everyone.

All that aside, I enjoyed the Golden Globes last night. I love award shows and the Golden Globes are among the best because I like the casual nature of it with all the big tables and drinks, like it’s just a big party. I was surprised by a few of the award winners (am I the only person in the world who has neither seen Borat nor felt any desire to do so? What IS the point of that movie anyway? Though his speech made me laugh until I snorted.) but a lot of the acceptance speeches were really good.

Now I just have to wait until February to catch the Oscars!

  1. I didn’t catch but a couple shots of B and A so I can’t comment but YES YES YES about Borat. WHAT IS the point of that movie? Evry clip I’ve seen looks so dumb. Just my opinion, of course.

  2. I didn’t watch the entire broadcast but from what I did see of B&A, she looked happy and glam to me! But I do love your possible explanations for why she may have been perceived otherwise. 😀

I did love America Ferrera’s acceptance speech. I’ve just started watching Ugly Betty (YAY! ABC ‘net video!!) and it’s my favorite new show, almost entirely because of America Ferrera. What a great win.

  3. That’s why I love you and your blog so much. You’re so kind, honest and understanding. I agree about Angelina. And your babies are gorgeous angels.

  4. I also agree with you about Angelina. Why do people think celebrities have to be happy all the time? Maybe Brad said something stupid in the limo that pissed her off. However, I personally can not stand her. I always felt that she was insincere and the taking a child away from their family really agravated me.

  5. My heart does NOT go out to Angelina. She has help, and she chose to be in this VERY public profession. And to walk the red carpet last night in front of who knows how many cameras. No one held a gun to her head.

  6. @ Kristyn – Angelina didn’t take a child away from their family, she legally adopted her first two children. It was Madonna who started an adoption process with a child who still has a father and came from a country that does not allow for international adoption.

@ Kim – I agree she has help and chose her profession, but after having read Down Came the Rain I look at celebrity mothers differently now; having hired help doesn’t change anything if your hormones are completely out of whack. She’s often quite gracious at public appearances in general.

  7. I didn’t catch the GGs, but I think B and A both look tired in that picture. I’m still incubating my first, but I know it’s going to take months before I can return to anything even resembling my ‘normal’ self. She’s usually quite charming on the red carpet, I’m sure if her behavior was off it was probably due to post pregnancy hormone fluctuations.

  8. I haven’t seen Borat. Don’t plan to. That said, I didn’t see the Globe Awards either, so I’m not the most media informed.

  9. Hear! Hear! I never liked watching her in movies because it seemed to me like the way she held her lips open, it reminded me of a chickens’ butt. But you have to give her credit, She has done some good deeds. The public should remember that movie stars are humans first then movie stars. Did you catch American Idol last night? Poor Paula, She must be totaly exhausted. I think she needs to take a break from that show. (for health reasons} Although I would miss her.

  10. In addition to being tired from a late night with the kiddos and/or PPD, she could be jet-lagged (who knows when they actually arrived in LA from their latest UN trip) or she could be sick with a cold. *Gasp* Stars get sick, too?!

I also have absolutely no desire to watch Borat. I don’t care for prank phone calls for laughs (ALA Howard Stern and others), so I’m pretty sure I wouldn’t like prank interviews either.

  11. Actually Angelina’s adopted daughter was living with family when she was adopted. I believe that both her parents were dead but it was a grandmother she was with but do not quote me on that. However, it does not change the fact that Angelina is a human and could be having a bad day. And don’t even get me started on the Madonna thing!

  12. GOsh, you know what’s really sad? That I had no clue the Golden Globes were even on. But yes, even superstars have a bad hair/skin/ day or “fat” day. (At least I’d like to think so. heehee.)

  13. I was just the other day noticing a magazine in the store with a cover screaming “Angelina looks pregnant again!” and a photo of her with the tiniest little belly. If anyone tells me that when my baby’s only 8 months old I swear I’ll smack ’em. Celebrities are either attacked for losing the weight ridiculously fast or for not losing it fast enough.

  14. “Celebrities are either attacked for losing the weight ridiculously fast or for not losing it fast enough.” – I was saying the same sort of thing to a coworker, referencing everyone saying that Kirstie Alley should have waited longer before wearing a bikini on Oprah. That totally pissed me off.

I love Angelina Jolie too, but she’s *always* been vilified. A few years ago, she was too “weird”. Then she met Brad – who was already having problems with Jen (you can’t steal a man who doesn’t want to be stolen!!) and they fell in love and she was vilified for that. I think that everything she is doing as an ambassador, which is probably pretty damn tiring in and of itself, is wonderful, and I think it’s also wonderful that she has adopted two children who needed homes. Not only did she adopt them, but she’s made it very clear that it’s important to her to show Maddox and Zahara (when she gets older, I suppose) their roots.

And I highly recommend “Borat”. I haven’t laughed that hard in a LONG time.

  15. I don’t know what Borat is about but I don’t like the look of him or his attitude. You know that madonna is really trying to make a difference to some poor little kid so don’t be so hard on her. AJ doesn’t look t oo bad and BP sure seems happy with her.
